The latest in a series of high-performing but ultra-portable notebooks, the Acer TravelMate P648-G2 has the potentials of a top-class business notebook.
Equipped with a first-rate CPU and housed in an attractive casing, the TravelMate P648-G2 is a redefinition of what a business laptop should be. This stylish 14-inch laptop weighs a teeny 1.7 kg that begs the question, “What is the limit to how light a notebook can weigh?” while also putting pressure on the competition.
For extra security, Acer included a fast fingerprint scanner which sits between the two mouse buttons.
Design
Firstly, the Acer TravelMate P648-G2 has a footprint of 328.7 x 235.5 mm and is 21.2 mm thin. And we’ve already seen that the notebook is 1.7 kg heavy. This makes the new TravelMate one of the lightest business notebooks and a great traveling companion.
Having a solid and premium build, this notebook uses a combination of metal and reinforced plastic for its chassis. The top of the lid has a matte metal finish and is resistant to fingerprints. The lid and base are held together by the highly-durable and stable metal hinges. In all, the TravelMate P648-G2 is a perfectly designed laptop, especially for those who care about aesthetics.
Display
Moving on, the TravelMate P648-G2 has a 14-inch IPS display at1920 x 1080 pixel resolution. The matte panel has a high contrast ratio, which is good but comparably low brightness level. Regardless, the screen is quite visible even while outdoors with good color reproduction. The display has an anti-glare protection and supports wide viewing angles.
Response times are on the average for this screen, and since it only outputs Full HD, screen tear should be minimal. In summary, the TravelMate’s display isn’t the best but it’ll suffice.
Keyboard and Touchpad
The keyboard is full-size and although the keys look shallow, they are comfortable to type with. However, there is no number pad. Above the keyboard – at the top right corner – are quick control buttons including the power button. For typing in the dark, the TravelMate has keyboard backlighting.
Below the keyboard (specifically the space bar) is a touchpad with two mouse buttons separated by a fingerprint reader. This touchpad with multi-finger control support is smooth enough to slide the fingers without any trouble.
Performance
The brain of the Acer TravelMate P648-G2 notebook is an Intel Core i7-7500U processor paired with an HD Graphics 620 GPU. The memory is 8GB and internal storage being 256GB of SSD – which hosts the OS – and 1TB of HDD space.
The 7th-gen Intel CPU has two cores and is clocked at 2.7GHz but can reach 3.5GHz through Turbo Boost. When combined with the SSD, this CPU delivers a snappy user experience for this laptop.
Battery Life
Furthermore, to keep the lights on when away from a power outlet is a 54Wh LI-Po battery. Compared with similarly spec’d laptops, the Acer TravelMate P648-G2 is a long-lasting notebook as it can deliver more than 10 hours of usage on a full charge, minimum-to-average settings/usage and about 2 hours on maximum settings/usage.
Ports and Connectivity
Three USB 3.0 ports, one USB type-C port (with Thunderbolt 3), a microphone/headphone combo jack, HDMI, and Gigabit Ethernet ports make up the ports collection. Surprisingly, there is a VGA port included – how thoughtful of Acer, and for security you have the Kensington Lock.

Underneath the base unit of the TravelMate P648-G2 is a micro-SIM card slot as well as a docking port.
