2018 has been a year of fingerprint readers among other cute features seen on smartphones. 2019 will bring about more innovations about fingerprint readers. So, which smartphones are we going to see the In-Display Fingerprint Readers mostly? Read on to find out.

Phones With In-Display Fingerprint Readers Now

New high-end smartphones like Huawei Mate 20 Pro, OnePlus 6T and Xiaomi Mi 8 Pro all feature an in-display fingerprint reader. It is to be expected that in 2024 new heights will be reached in smartphone technology and fingerprint readers too will be affected in one way or another.

So how will this technology evolve in the coming months?

iPhone has moved to Face ID, other smartphones are bearing facial and iris recognition, and there are those that like the good quality Android phones stick with fingerprint ID as the main biometric entry point to phones. The thing is, there will always be fingerprint technology in high-end smartphones.

Vivo Nex S, Huawei Mate 20 Pro, and Honor Magic 2 smartphones have all experimented with In-Display Fingerprint Readers.

    About the Technology

In-Display Fingerprint Readers include either optical or ultrasonic technology. Optical scanners make use of light to illuminate fingers, while a tiny camera under the screen takes an image of the finger which is then compared to the stored image for something like a verification process.

That’s about that for optical In-Display Fingerprint Readers.

About the ultrasonic, which promises to be more popular in 2024, In-Display Fingerprint Readers will take things further by being able to still identify wet, dirty fingers because this technology will build up an image of your fingerprints. In essence, this will serve as face ID of the user’s finger.

    Qualcomm’s In-Display Fingerprint Reader

Recently, Qualcomm announced its 3rd generation In-Display Fingerprint ultrasonic Reader at its annual tech summit. The company calls it the 3D Sonic sensor, which is the latest version of Snapdragon Sense ID that was originally revealed in 2015.

The technology may feature in the upcoming Samsung’s Galaxy S10 which will be released at the Mobile World Congress in 2024.

    Why Ultrasonic In-Display Fingerprint Readers?

Additionally, the beauty of ultrasonic technology is the level of accuracy it gets other than that of the competitors such as the optical technology In-Display Fingerprint Readers.

Ultrasonic is so powerful to the level that it can penetrate through glass and metal. In view of this, Qualcomm’s new sensor may b able to work through thicker material. However, this is expected, but not confirmed.

Companies Associated with In-Display Fingerprint Readers

Apart from Qualcomm, there are other producers of fingerprints such as Synaptics, known for being responsible for Xiaomi Mi 8 Pro Clear ID fingerprint. They are also responsible for the Vivo Nex S sensor.

Accordingly, Synaptics has been involved in the phone interface business for more than 30 years. This company is also having hands in many other standard external fingerprint sensors on phones.

In-Display Fingerprint Readers- Huawei & OnePlus

Huawei promises that its fingerprint readers feature 10 level dynamic pressure sensing for accuracy. OnePlus said that the colored light chosen for its fingerprint readers has been tested and used and has passed 300 thousand taps and has not shown any sign of deterioration.

Huawei didn’t make any claims for improved accuracy however. But one area in which both companies need to work on is in the stressful process of setting up In-Display Fingerprint Readers.
