Broken Phone Screen? How to enable USB debugging

You dropped your phone from your hands, you smashed it and now you need to know how to enable USB debugging with the broken screen? USB debugging is a way to simplify the connection of the Android device with a computer so that you can access the phone from the computer and transfer the data. Generally, you can enable USB debugging on Android in just a few steps.

However, when the screen of your Android phone is broken or unresponsive, you need to enable USB debugging on the broken screen with extra tools- OTG cable or ADB. And if none of the methods work on your phone, you can also retrieve broken screen Android data without USB debugging, with the help of a program.

How to enable USB debugging with a broken screen?

If your Android phone’s touchscreen is broken but the screen is still on (you can still see the screen), you can use a USB OTG and a mouse to control the phone with a broken screen and enable USB debugging.

USB OTG is a technology that allows you to connect a device (mouse, USB drive, keyboard, etc.) to your smartphone or tablet via the USB port of type C or micro USB. For example, by connecting a mouse to the phone via an OTG cable, you can use the mouse to control the phone without touching the screen.

But not all Android phones support OTG technology. So make sure your broken phone (Samsung, HTC, Huawei, LG, Lenovo, Sony, Asus, etc.) is OTG compatible. You can only consult your phone or Google user’s guide if your phone supports USB OTG with the specific device model.

To use OTG cable to enable USB debugging on Android phone with broken screen:

Step 1. With a working OTG cable, connect your Android phone with a mouse. Some users were able to connect an Xbox / PS3 / PS4 wired USB controller to their smartphone and enable USB debugging with the controller. If you have a controller, try this.

Step 2– Click the mouse to unlock the phone and enable USB debugging in Settings.

Step 3. Connect the broken phone to the computer and the phone will be recognized as an external memory.

Step 4. On your computer, open your phone’s file folders and copy the necessary photos, contacts, videos, and music to your computer.

Connect the phone with the broken screen to the computer to retrieve the information before sending the phone for repair.

Access the phone with broken screen from the PC

Can I enable USB debugging on Android remotely from a computer? The problem has been raised in several forums. And the answer is no. You cannot enable USB debugging from PC / Mac. But you can still use the ADB command or the terminal to back up your damaged Android PC.

On Android, there is a tool called SDK that can debug problems with Android devices. The ADB tool (Android Debug Bridge) is part of the SDK tool. With the PC ADB tool, your PC can communicate with your Android phone via USB and execute a series of commands, including backing up data on the phone.

By running the ADB command, you can extract data from Android with a broken screen by enabling USB debugging

Step 1Install ADB driver.

Step 2– ADB generally needs to communicate with a phone with USB debugging. Since USB debugging is disabled on the defective phone, it is necessary to start the device in recovery mode through TWRP custom recovery

Step 3– When the phone is in recovery mode, start the ADB tool and connect the broken-screen phone to the PC via USB.

Step 4– Write Command Prompt- adb devices.

Step 5– Enter the command to back up data on broken Android:

adb pull / data / media / clockworkmod / backup ~ / Desktop / Android-up

Tip- if you are not a technician and you know nothing about ADB, fastboot and commands, it is risky to follow the tutorial to use ADB without knowing what you are doing. You could end up locking your phone and turning it into a brick.

Obviously, it is very difficult for ordinary users to enable USB debugging on an Android phone with a broken screen. Fortunately, there is still a way to access the phone and recover data without USB debugging.

How to recover data from the smartphone with a program?

Data extraction with specific programs can recover data from the Android phone with broken / black / locked screen. With the right program, you can access photos, contacts, WhatsApp messages / SMS, music, videos, etc. on the phone with a broken PC screen and save the data on the PC.

It is not necessary to enable USB debugging for the application to work. It is a great help when you need to extract / back up your broken screen phone data.

The following steps are more or less the same for all programs.

  • You can use Remo Recover, Wondershare and Recuvam and more.

Step 1. Download the program on your Windows PC and run the program.

Step 2. Connect the broken-screen phone to the PC with a USB cable. And choose Start.

Step 3. Choose the name and model of the phone device. Click on Confirm.

Step 4. The program will guide you to put the phone in Download mode. Follow the guide to access the Download mode with the Home + Power + Volume down button.

Step 5– the program will start checking the phone data. Next, all phone data will be displayed.

Step 6– Select the required data and click Restore to save the data on the computer.

With data extraction, you can also repair broken Android phones, such as Android phones locked in a boot loop, recovery mode and more.
