Business-class Laptop – Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon (2024)

Lenovo’s ThinkPad laptops are renowned for their blockish, but sturdy build, robust keyboard, and whatnot made for the business minded. This year’s edition of this business-class laptop comes with just a few add-ons to the regulars which we’ve come to find on ThinkPad laptops. The extra features of the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon include an eight-gen high-end CPU, type-C USB and best of all is the long-lasting battery.

Design

Lenovo pulled off with an impressive design on the ThinkPad X1. This is a stylish-looking laptop in a slender package. However, this year’s edition is very much like last year’s in terms of dimensions and even weight. It stands at 2.5 pounds and measures 12.73 x 8.54 x 0.62 inches.

The chassis is all black as usual and feels very comfortable to the grip. The ThinkPad X1 is made from a combo of magnesium and carbon fiber that makes it very durable. And besides, this is one of the lightest 14-inch laptops currently available.

The top of the lid feels smooth and soft to the touch. The ThinkPad and X1 logos is also visible atop the lid. Upon lifting up of the lid, you are introduced to the display with very minimal side bezels which is very impressive. At the lower part of the deck (close to the touchpad) is a fingerprint scanner for extra security.

Display

Moving forward, the ThinkPad X1 comes in various screen configurations. The standard model sports a Full HD panel, the next uses a 2560 x 1440p touch display, and the priciest one uses an HDR screen that is also 1440p. The1440p display model is the only one having a webcam that is compatible with the Windows Hello facial recognition feature. Nevertheless, whichever model you decide to pick, you are getting a really bright – brightness level far above the average at 469 nits – and sharp display.

Keyboard and Touchpad and TrackPoint

As a business laptop, the ThinkPad X1 Carbon features an impressive keyboard for all your typing needs. The 1.8mm key travel and 2 grams actuation force add to the usability of this keyboard.

The touchpad sits beneath the keyboard in an area of 3.9 x 2.2 square inches. The high precision touchpad lacks any visible buttons and has support for multi-touch gestures.

Between the G and H keys is a red pointing stick called TrackPoint. Instead of going back and forth from your keyboard to the touchpad you can use the precise TrackPoint to navigate your cursor.

Performance

The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon uses either an Intel Core i5-8250U or a Core i7-8850U CPU. Either way, the processor is paired with an 8GB RAM and 512 gigs of PCIe-based SSD. This combination ensures that the ThinkPad X1 performs every task without any hiccup.

Since this is not a gaming laptop, a dedicated graphics chip is out of the mix. Instead, you’ll find an integrated Intel UHD 620 GPU. And while this may not be the best GPU, it still delivers well for the simplest of graphics tasks.

Battery Life

Battery life on the ThinkPad X1 Carbon is something to be joyful about. Whichever model of the X1 Carbon you decide to purchase, you are assured of a long-lasting battery. While the higher-resolution options will last lower than the 1080p variant, all can deliver up to about 10 hours on battery.

Ports and Connectivity

The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon is not lacking in ports as it impresses with its modest collection. There is a full-size HDMI port, a microSD card reader, two USB 3.0 ports, and two Thunderbolt 3 ports. An audio jack, Kensington slot and power jack are also present. Bluetooth 4.1 and Dual-Band Wi-Fi are also present for wireless connectivity.

Price and Availability

From $1500 or thereabout, the base Full HD variant of the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon can be yours. You’ll need to add more to that if you want the 1440p one or Core i7 model.
