With so much violence reported in the news these days, we need to get more tips and ideas on how to keep ourselves and our loved ones safe. News apps are good for us, but there is the Citizen app that could turn out to be something better.
Citizen app is designed to provide the user with real-time safety alerts and instant access to verified 911 information that will keep you and others abreast of what’s happening and what to do to keep safe.
The app was released on May 25, 2020, and since then, over seven million people make use of it as of this day. That means its popularity is growing, owing to the fact that many people are using it to check police presence and ensure safety at protests and demonstrations in several cities.
The Citizen app has been around for about five years, but it was known as Vigilante since 2016. About two days after it was introduced in 2016, Apple pulled it from their store over concerns that it encouraged user vigilantism. But the app was repackaged and relaunched in the year 2017 as Citizen.
One thing the app doesn’t do is encourage users to take the law into their own hands. The developer’s main goal is to help users avoid potentially dangerous situations that they may ordinarily be involved in.
The app tells the user when he or she should be cautious. It is even possible that users may be informed of dangerous situations before the police are alerted. The app highlights that the user should not put himself or herself at unnecessary risk.
The app is receiving more accolades by the day, especially when used to send out information about potential dangers, which has saved people’s lives. One notable situation was when an abducted boy was found after the app sent out alerts during the 2019 fire at Trump Tower in Manhattan.
