Cubot King Kong; the cheapest rugged smartphone?

Cubot is that brand that is renowned for making smartphones that are affordable and at the same time comes with decent features. Cubot first gave the rugged feature a try on the Cubot X10 but didn’t quite give the phone much of the rugged touch as it came with only waterproof capabilities.

With the Cubot King Kong, the Chinese firm have gone full-fledged on rugged smartphones. Let’s highlight some key features of the Cubot King Kong.

DESIGN AND DISPLAY

Cubot King Kong

The design and overall appearance of the Cubot King Kong looks average to me. Nothing really special. The device comes coated with thick plastic covering which is available in two colours – Black and Orange.

However, despite the lackluster appearance, the body of the Cubot King Kong is fitted and compact in such a way that it resists both water and dust, thanks to its IP68 certification. Likewise, it doesn’t easily break, crack or shatter whenever it falls against hard and Rocky surfaces or objects. Cubot have also stated that the King Kong can withstand extreme of temperatures ranging from -35°C to 65°C. This can be compared to putting your phone in a freezer or in partially boiled water.

The Cubot King Kong has a 5.0 inch IPS LCD HD screen with a 720 x 1280 pixels and a pixel density of 294 pixels per inch. Being a rugged device, it enjoys Corning Gorilla Glass protection, so there really may not be any need to [eafl id=”24789″ name=”Jumia NG Screen Protectors” text=”purchase an external glass screen protector”].

PROCESSOR, OS AND STORAGE

In these 3 compartments, the only exciting aspect the Cubot King Kong wows is the operating system. The device comes with the Android v7.0 Nougat OS which allows users enjoys some inherent benefits and features like the Split screen or multi-window feature for smoother multitasking.

Coming in with a 2 GB RAM size, users shouldn’t encounter lag when operating multiple apps simultaneously on the device. There is however little storage space (16 GB) that comes with the phone. Sadly, the micro SD card slot also allows expansion to only a meagre 32 GB only. A 64 GB expansion limit would have been more reasonable.

The device is powered by a MediaTek MT6580 chipset and a Quad-core processor with a speed of 1.3 GHz.

CAMERA AND BATTERY

The Cubot King Kong comes with single camera both on the front and at the back. The rear camera is made of an 8 MP lens and has a LED flash support (as every phone should). The front camera is a 5 MP shooter. Decent but lacks a front flash.

Keeping the device up and running is a non-removable battery with a capacity of 4,400 mAh. With the Cubot King Kong, you really have no use of [eafl id=”24795″ name=”Jumia NG Power Banks” text=”purchase an external glass screen protector”], the device itself is a power bank as it can be used to charge other devices through reverse charging using an OTG cable.

PRICING AND AVAILABILITY

The Cubot King Kong is one of the cheapest rugged smartphone out there. The device costs between $110 and $120. That’s about NGN 37,000 – NGN 42,000.
