Fairphone – Meet World’s Most Sustainable Phone

Apple can be big, Huawei can be bigger, while Samsung is the biggest smartphone maker, but the Fairphone is the phone that beats all when it comes to sustainability of smartphones. However, most people have never heard of this smartphone. But the smartphone launched its third edition just last month, August 2019. Apart from being world’s most sustainable phone, this phone is also the most ethical phone anyone can find today.

The company has sold almost 200,000 phones since it started in 2013, so you can see that it is not known at all when it comes to sales and fans. Yet, with a unique approach, the Fairphone is setting a pace in the smartphone industry.

Unique Approach

Okay, so it sells for $500 and when you compare it phones that Huawei and Samsung sells at that price, they look bigger, and come with better screens, bigger memory, bigger battery, better chipset than what you have in the Fairphone. Its camera is even just one. Looking at the design, most people won’t think it is sleek.

But take a look at the way this phone is built. It is one phone that is the easiest to repair and also replace components.  This means that the phone can outlive just about any other phone in the world. Secondly, the materials for making the phone are sourced from sustainable sources as well. It is confirmed that this phone makes use of Fairtrade certified gold. The company goes further than that by taking care of rights, wages, and working conditions of those who work in the factories where these phones are made. These points make the phone the most sustainable and ethical phone manufacturer in the world.

Where it Falls Short

So, fairphone is good but most people in the world will never see it. The company doesn’t have a plan to compete with giant smartphone manufacturers and you can see that in the features which are so retarded. So, this phone will never truly be a household name and because the customers may easily disassemble the components, some users loathe thinking of it. Thus, this phone will never be able to work for the majority of humans alive today. Things may change if the company re-jigs its strategy.

For smartphones today, the onus is on using a smartphone now and changing it later when a new edition is released into the smartphone market.

The Good

It works if people are ready and willing to keep their phones for a long time. The same works for when people are okay with replacing components with ease, and are eager to upgrade their Fairphones. Already, with Fairphone 3, the company has been making a few changes such as it is becoming larger but then, it also makes the phone more expensive. That will be a problem to some while others may not bother. The company’s philosophy is to make sure that nothing is wasted. Yes, Fairphone is remarkable and will remain so because the makers of the phone are encouraging other smartphone manufacturers to follow their lead in creating sustainable and ethical smartphones. This seems the right time for it, so there’s a fair chance that Fairphone will get it right. But can it cross over to make the world of laptops and tablet industries? Maybe.
