Google releases February patches for Pixel phones – many problems solved

Google has released the update including the Android security patches of February 2019 on all of its Pixel phones. The OTA files and factory images that refer to the latest Android update are now available for download.

The update is available for all Pixel models, including Pixel 3, Pixel 3 XL, Pixel 2, Pixel 2 XL, Pixel, Pixel XL and Pixel C. However, because Google has abandoned the security patch support for its models Nexus in November of last year, the update is not available for Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P. The February Android Security Update addresses a total of 42 issues and resolves all vulnerabilities, from the smallest to the most complex.

According to the Pixel bulletin, the Android security update of February 2019 does not include any exclusive features. Google, however, has provided “functional updates and improvements” to various parts of the Android platform” through the latest update.

Also according to the security bulletin, the latest security update for Android has two patch levels dated 2019-02-01 and 2019-02-05, which solve problems 15 and 27 respectively. The vulnerabilities range from high to critical and the most serious problem that is solved with the new update is that related to the multimedia framework, which could allow a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code in the context of a privileged process using a specially crafted PNG file.

With the February Android security update, Google also solved the media library and kernel components issues. The update also corrects system vulnerabilities and problems related to the various Qualcomm components. “We have not received reports of exploitation or active abuse by customers of these newly reported problems,” Google said in the bulletin.

As noted by the 9to5Google portal, the February 2019 Android Security Update moves the Information section to the Main Settings menu, just above the Suggestions and Support option. Previously, the Phone Information section was available in the System menu. A section dedicated to safety and regulations is also available, including the contents of the Pixel Safety and Warranty brochure.
