It’s easy to deactivate Amazon Prime. Amazon Prime seemed like a great deal when you registered, but now you notice that you don’t use the service as much as you thought; maybe it’s time to cancel the subscription.
How to cancel Amazon Prime subscription
To deactivate Amazon Prime you need to go to the Amazon website, but the process involves some oddities. However, before you can unsubscribe, you must log in to your account.
If you are not already logged in and you see Hello, go to the Account and List menu, place the cursor on the Account and List menu to display an Access button. Select Log in and follow the on-screen instructions to log in.
Once logged in, you’re ready to unsubscribe from Amazon Prime:
- Move the cursor over the menu item Accounts and lists until a drop-down menu appears.
- Select the item labeled as a Prime subscription.
- Note– you may be asked to log in again. In this case, follow the instructions displayed.
- A new page will open that lists all the benefits for Prime members. In the sidebar on the far left, at the bottom, you’ll find an article labeled End Subscription and benefits.
- Select End subscription and benefits. Do not worry; you will be given the opportunity to change your mind.
- Amazon will show you a list of Prime benefits that you will lose and provide you with some options including Keep my benefits, Cancel my benefits and Remind me later. The last option will keep you enrolled in Prime but you will receive a reminder 3 days before the next renewal of the Prime subscription.
- Select Cancel My benefits to continue with the procedure to cancel your Amazon Prime subscription
- Note– Amazon will offer to change the payment method from annual to monthly. You could consider the monthly pass if you need Prime for just a little while, perhaps to complete a series of videos.
- You can select Remember me later, Continue to cancel or Keep my subscription. If you intend to cancel, select Continue to cancel.
- Amazon will display a new page and once again it will give you the opportunity to remember it later, change your mind and keep your subscription, or finally cancel your Prime subscription. If you wish to cancel, select the option indicating End in MM, DD, Year, where MM is the month, DD is the day and year is the year.
- Once you have selected End, a confirmation message will be displayed along with an option to register.
What to watch out for
There are always some pitfalls to watch out for when canceling a subscription; Amazon does a reasonable job pointing out the problems that could arise during the Prime cancellation process. Some further obstacles to keep an eye on are:
- Refunds– once Amazon has debited your credit card, at the end of a free trial period or before renewing your subscription, you have three days to cancel the service and receive a refund. A full refund can be granted if the Prime service has not been used, while partial refunds are applied if the service was used at any time during the three-day cancellation window.
- Free Trial – You won’t be able to sign up for another free Prime trial for at least a year. If you decide you want to use Prime before the end of the year, you will need to register as a paying member.
- Additional subscriptions– Prime offers many services related to your Prime subscription. Registrations such as Prime Video or Prime Music will not be renewed once your Prime account has been canceled.
- Prime Photos– Unlimited Prime storage space is restored to Amazon Drive storage space.
- Amazon account– cancellation of Prime does not affect your basic Amazon account. You will remain an account holder that you can use for all non-Prime Amazon services.
