Mistakes happen, thankfully, eBay has a one-hour grace period to allow buyers or sellers to cancel an order if they didn’t intend to buy or sell an item. However, once that hour has passed, it will be up to the seller and buyer to negotiate a resolution. Here’s how to cancel an eBay order.
THE GUIDE IN BRIEF
To cancel an order on eBay, log in to your eBay, go to the section where you buy, find the item you bought, select from the drop-down menu “Other actions” on the item, and choose the Cancel order option. Doing so will send the seller a request to cancel the order.
How to cancel an eBay order within the first hour
You are committed to that purchase when you bid or purchase an eBay item. Likewise, sellers are obligated to complete the sale when a buyer makes a purchase. However, there is a window of time to cancel an order in the event of an error.
For Buyers
If you wish to cancel an order, it is good practice to notify the seller as soon as possible. Also, please note that if your order contains more than one item, the entire order will need to be canceled.
If you just bought something in the last hour and the seller hasn’t shipped it yet, you can ask to cancel the order. If the seller has already sent you the item, you won’t be able to cancel it.
Go to your purchase history and find the order you want to cancel. Open the More Actions drop-down menu and select Ask to cancel this order.
Then, select a reason why you want to cancel the order to let the seller know why and click Submit.
After that, the seller will have three days to respond to your request. eBay will automatically cancel your order if they haven’t responded by that date and you haven’t paid yet. If you have paid and the seller does not respond, he will be held responsible for shipping the item.
For sellers
Sometimes, sellers may sell the item on a different platform, or the item may get damaged accidentally. In these cases, the seller can cancel the order so that eBay notifies the buyer, and if the buyer has already paid, they will receive a refund.
In the seller’s hub, go to Orders. Alternatively, you can go to My eBay and select Sold. Find the order you want to cancel, open the drop-down menu next to it marked with a small arrow, and select Cancel Order.
Choose a reason for canceling and then select Submit to finish.
How to cancel an eBay order after an hour
eBay will send you a confirmation email when you have bought or sold an item. If you missed it or changed your mind after an hour, it is a little more complicated to cancel an order, although not impossible.
For Buyers
If it’s been more than an hour since your purchase, you should contact the seller and ask them to cancel it. To do this, go to Purchase History and find the order you want to cancel. Select the More Actions drop-down menu and select Contact Seller.
From there, choose Request to cancel this order in the topics. Write a message explaining to the seller why you need to cancel and select Submit to issue your request.
For sellers
Sellers can cancel an eBay order up to 30 days after the sale, even if the buyer has already paid. Please keep in mind, though, that if you cancel an order, you may get negative transaction feedback, which affects the seller’s performance level.
Go to the seller’s hub, and go to Orders. Alternatively, you can go to My eBay and select Sold. Find the order you want to cancel and select Cancel Order from the menu that opens by clicking on More Actions. Choose a reason for canceling and then select Submit to finish.
When you cancel an order, a full refund will automatically be issued. If the buyer doesn’t get their money back within ten days of the cancellation date, they can file a claim with the eBay Money Back Guarantee, and you can give them their money back the right way.
