Many video games are designed to be played with high-end headphones and, if you play on a console, we recommend having a pair of wireless headphones. Whether you are a late night player and don’t want to wake up the rest of the house or just want to immerse yourself in the action in the best way, here’s how to pair the Bluetooth headset with the PS4.
Check the Sony list of compatible PlayStation headphones to see if your headphones are officially compatible with PS3 or PS4. If you haven’t bought a pair of Bluetooth headphones yet and pairing your Bluetooth headset with your PlayStation is your priority, you should choose an option from that list.
How to pair the supported Bluetooth headphones to the PS4
- Turn on the Bluetooth headset and set it to Associate mode. If you are not sure how to set headphones in Pair mode, consult the usual manual provided.
- On PlayStation 4, go to Settings > Devices > Bluetooth Devices.
- Select compatible headphones from the list to associate them with the PS4. If headphones are not displayed, try resetting the headphones or console.

How to connect unsupported Bluetooth headphones to the PS4
If Bluetooth headsets are not on the list of officially compatible devices, it may still be possible to connect them using a simple alternative solution. You will need an audio cable with a built-in microphone, included in most Bluetooth headphones.
Even if you follow these steps, not all headphones work with this method.
- Connect the headphones and the PlayStation 4 controller with the audio cable mentioned above, then turn on your headphones.
- Again, from PlayStation 4, go to Settings > Devices > Bluetooth Devices. Then select the name of the headphones.
- After activating the headphones, return to the Devices menu and select Audio Devices.
- Select Output device > Headphone connected to the controller. You will probably also need to adjust the volume on this menu, using Volume Control (Headphones).
- Finally, select Output to Headphones and make sure you select All Audio instead of Audio Chat.
- Open a game and cross your fingers- this process should work with most Bluetooth headsets.
Use a USB adapter to connect the headphones to your PS4
There are many USB devices that can be used to connect Bluetooth devices to different things, including your PlayStation 4. Here’s how to connect it:
- Insert the USB adapter into an available USB port on the PlayStation 4. Turn on the device so that the PlayStation 4 can identify it.
- From the console, go to Settings > Devices > Audio Devices.
- Select Output Device > USB Headphones. You will probably also need to adjust the volume from this menu. It will take some guesswork, but you’ll probably want to set the volume, at least, in half…
- Select Output to headphones, then select All audio.
- Upload your favorite game and check if your headphones and volume are set as you need them.
If your headphones don’t connect using any of these methods, you’ll need to buy another pair of headphones.
