Video cropping, rotation, and resizing are some of the most common changes you can make when editing video in Adobe Premiere Pro. However, if you are new to video editing with Premiere, you may not know how to do these things yet, which can be frustrating.
Premiere makes these processes very easy, so follow these steps to quickly become a pro at cropping, rotating, and resizing your videos.
How to crop video in Premiere Pro
Cropping a video is slightly different than cropping an image, but you can still do it in Premiere. You’ll be using an effect that Premiere has to do this. Follow these steps to crop your video clip.
- Drag the video you want to crop onto the timeline.
- Go to the Effects panel and search for Crop. It should show up in Transform. Click and drag it over the video you want to crop.
- Now go to the effects controls. Find the Crop effect listed and look inside the drop-down menu. You will see options for Left, Right, Top and Bottom. You can drag the numerical values next to these to crop your video.
- You can also zoom in on your video here to fill the screen if you wish by selecting Zoom. When you shift the values when Zoom is selected, your video will fill the screen in the desired amount.
If you don’t want to use numeric values, you can also crop by highlighting the crop effect and a square with toggle bars should appear around your video in the preview window. You can use these bars to crop the video.
If you want your video to fade into the crop, you can select Edge Feather and use the numerical value to change the intensity of the gradient.
How to rotate videos in Adobe Premiere Pro
Rotating a video can create some interesting effects in the final result. This is also a very easy effect to achieve. Here’s how to rotate your video in Adobe Premiere Pro.
- Go to the Effects Controls panel and click on the Motion drop-down section.
- You should then see the Rotation option listed here. Using the numerical value next to it, you can change the amount of rotation on your video. By dragging it to the right, the video will rotate clockwise and vice versa.
- If you just want to flip your video in a certain direction, 90 will flip it to the right side, 180 will flip it upside down, and -90 will flip it to the left side.
Using this method allows you to rotate your video regardless of how you set it up or what effects you have on it.
How to resize videos in Adobe Premiere Pro
Resizing a video is a good option if the video you added doesn’t fit the size of your overall project. Those black bars appearing around these smaller videos can be annoying, so you may want to resize them to fit. Here’s how to do it in Premiere in several ways.
Set to Frame Size
This method is best if you have a lot of clips that don’t fit the sequence size settings.
- Find the video in the timeline you want to fit the frame size.
- Right-click on this clip and select Set to Frame Size. The clip should now fit the size of the sequence settings.
Fit to frame size
When Premiere resizes the clip to the frame size, it manipulates the pixels to fit the video to the sequence settings while making it easier to process. However, this can sacrifice the quality of your video, but if you want faster processing time you can do it this way.
- Find the video in the timeline you want to resize.
- Right-click and select Fit to Frame Size. You should see your clip now resized to sequence settings.
Manual scale
If you’d like to manually resize your video clip to achieve something other than setting it to the same sequence settings, there’s also an easy way to do it.
- Go to your Effects Controls panel and look under Motion. You should see an option called Scala.
- Next to Scale is a numerical value that you can change to set the size of the clip within the frame. By default, it’s set to 100, you can make it as big as you like or make it disappear entirely.
For any values you change, you can always click the arrow icon next to the values to reset them to their default setting.

Using these methods above, you can easily make the necessary changes to your video clips. It might seem confusing at first, especially if you’re brand new to video editing and Adobe Premiere, but over time you won’t have to think twice about these tasks.
