Google Assistant is intelligent enough to do many things. One thing it can’t do, however, is intelligently adjust its volume. If you ask Google Assistant a question, it will give you a reply in full volume and this sometimes may be louder than you may prefer. One way to avoid awkward moments such as this is by disabling speech output for Google Assistant on your Android device.
If you want to give Google Assistant a command without getting the reply spoken out loud, a simple method is by using the keyboard to type in your command. Google Assistant is programmed to give your answers back in just text if you used your keyboard to give the command.
However, having to type in your command doesn’t really fit into why most people use Google Assistant. You shouldn’t have to give up the most important feature of Google Assistant just because you prefer to see the results on the screen. In this guide, we will show you how to disable speech output for Google Assistant on your Android phone.
You should note before we proceed that you can use this feature only on Android devices. You can’t use this feature on iPhones, iPads, or Google Assitant smart speakers and displays.
How to Disable Speech Output on Google Assistant on Android devices
First off, go to the Google Assistant app. You can do this by simply saying “Okay, Google.” You can also swipe in from the bottom left or bottom right corner of the screen.
Now, tap on the Snapshot icon. You can find the icon in the bottom left corner of the screen. Now, you will see different UIs based on the device you are using.
Now, if you haven’t already signed in to your Google account on your Android device, you should do so now.
Once you are signed in, tap on the profile icon. This will take you to the Assistant’s settings menu.
From this menu, you should see a list of things that you can do with Google Assistant. The feature we are specifically looking for is the “Assistant Voice” option.
If you scroll to the bottom of the screen, you will see the “Speech Output” section. From this section, tap on the listed device to select how conversational the responses you get will be.
The list includes three options. If you select the “Full” option, Google Assistant will read out pretty much every response. If you select the “Brief” option, certain things like weather forecasts will not be read out. However, if you want Google Assistant to not speak at all, select the “None” option.
If you select the “unless hands-free” option, Google Assistant will still recite responses but it will only do this if you initiate the exchange in a hands-free way. In situations like these, Google assumes that you are unable to look at the screen at the moment.
