Go directly to the Windows 10 password prompt without going through the lock screen. The lock screen is an informative and pretty veneer for the Windows 10 login screen that is of no use to me… in my opinion. Just scroll or click and close, but if you prefer to disable the lock screen on Windows 10, there are a couple of ways you can do it.
How to disable the Windows 10 lock screen
The best way to disable the lock screen in Windows 10 is to add a new registry key. There are a few steps, but if you follow them one after another, you will soon know how to get rid of the Windows lock screen forever.
Changing the Windows registry can have a dramatic effect on how Windows works and shouldn’t be done so lightly. If you are not at all sure of the changes made, keep calm and back up your Windows registry for your own safety.
- Open the Windows 10 registry editor by typing “Regedit” in the Windows search bar. Select the corresponding result.
- When asked if you want to allow the app to make changes to your device, select Yes.
- From the menu on the left, double-click HKEY_LOCAL MACHINE.
- Double-click on SOFTWARE.
- Double-click Policies.
- Double-click on Microsoft.
- Right-click on Windows.
- From the drop-down menu, select New, then select Key.
- Call it Customization.
- Select the key you just created. Right-click in the window pane on the right and select New, then select DWORD value (32 bit).
- Rename the DWORD “New value n. 1″ just created as NoLockScreen. Regedit should automatically select the name of the entry for customization, but if not, right-click and select Rename.
- Double-click on NoLockScreen.
- In the Value data field, type 1.
To find out if the change you’ve made has taken effect, press the Windows key + the L key to lock the PC. If you are directed directly to the login screen instead of the lock screen that generally proceeds, congratulations, you have successfully disabled the Windows lock screen!
How to disable the Windows 10 Pro lock screen
Although making changes to the Windows 10 registry disables the lock screen of Windows 10 Home and Windows 10 Pro, these latter users have an alternative method that is a little faster.
It also works with the Enterprise and Education versions of Windows 10.
- Search for “Gpedit” in the Windows 10 search bar and select the corresponding result.
- In the Local Group Policy Editor window, look in the menu on the left and double-click Administrative Templates.
- Double-click on Control Panel.
- Select customization.
- Double-click Do not display the lock screen in the window pane on the right.
- Select Enabled at the top left, then select Apply and select OK.
Head to see if you have successfully disabled the lock screen by pressing Windows key + L. If you are directed to the login screen instead of the lock screen, congratulations, you have removed the Windows 10 lock screen from your system.
