One of the nice things about Chromebooks is that they are largely cloud-based. You don’t need to fill your hard drive with files that never end. Instead, you can do almost anything via Google Drive. However, most of us are used to Microsoft Office apps like Word, Excel, and Powerpoint. Fortunately, you can install and run Microsoft Office on the Chromebook.

You can’t install desktop versions of Office on a Chromebook, but you still have options available when it comes to running Microsoft Office on a Chromebook. Depending on the software you run on your Chromebook, you will be able to use Office, however, with limitations. Let me tell you how.

How to install and run Microsoft Office on Chromebook?

Microsoft Office on Chromebook thanks to the Google Play Store

The easiest way to get Microsoft Office on your Chromebook is to download the Office apps available for Android and Chromebook. If you use the Google Play Store, this is seriously the best option available. You’re ready to download and use the Office programs you want to use on your Chromebook.

Follow these simple steps:

  1. Open the Google Play store.
  2. Find the Office program you want to download and select it.
  3. Click on Install.
  4. Once the app is downloaded, open the Chrome launcher to open the app.
  5. Sign in to your Microsoft account or Office 365 account.

If your Chromebook only has access to the Chrome Web Store, unfortunately, you can’t download the various Office apps, but that doesn’t mean you’re out of luck. Office Online can be used. With the online version of Office, you will be able to work, edit, and share Office files directly in your browser. You need to be connected to the Internet to use Microsoft Office on your Chromebook, which may not be ideal, but it does mean having an alternative to Drive. Use Office online.

These are the only methods to install and run Microsoft Office on the Chromebook; online if you don’t have the Google Play Store or as we said through the Google Play Store. You won’t have access to all the features you might have on a Windows or Mac PC, but your Chromebook wasn’t created to be the same as one.

However, this gives you the ability to work on the same Office files on different devices, which can help you avoid converting files from Drive. The Chromebook may be clearly related to the Google ecosystem, but that doesn’t mean you have to give up all your working comforts and bow to the Google gods. You can still use your favorite apps.

Have you used Microsoft Office on your Chromebook? Were there any important limitations or advantages that you believe are worthy of being shared with your fellow readers? Let us know in the comments.
