1. Turn your folder into a .dmg file to safeguard vital files

For the creation of a password-protected folder on your Mac, adhere to these steps to turn your folder into a disc image file (.dmg).

  1. If you are yet to do it, create the folder you wish to encrypt and add your vital files to it.
  2. Launch the Apps folder on your Mac.
  3. Launch the Utilities folder.
  4. Launch the Disk Utility application.
  5. From the menu at the top of your display to the right of the Apple icon, select File.
  6. From the File menu, select New Image.
  7. From the File menu, select Image from Folder.
  8. You will see an opened folder window, select the file you wish to add a password to and tap Choose. The file can be renamed as soon as you select it.

How Can I Use A Password Protected Finder?

Your password-protected folder will be visible in your Finder window as a .dmg file. Double tap to open it. You will be told to type in your password when you open the file.

The disk image of your folder will be visible below Locations on the left side of your Finder window after opening it with your password.

Tap on the folder name in the Locations menu to see the files inside. Files can be dragged into the .dmg folder the way it is done for a normal folder. Saving fresh files into this folder is allowed as well.

As soon as you type in your password, the disk image will stay open and will be in the Locations menu until it is ejected. Right tap on the folder and select “Eject [folder name]” to exit your folder. It will no longer be seen from the Locations menu.
