  1. If you are yet to do it, create the folder you wish to encrypt and add your vital files to it.
  2. Launch the Apps folder on your Mac.

  5. From the menu at the top of your display to the right of the Apple icon, select File.
  6. From the File menu, select New Image.
  7. From the File menu, select Image from Folder.
  8. You will see an opened folder window, select the file you wish to add a password to and tap Choose. The file can be renamed as soon as you select it.
  9. In the window that will be visible, you will see menus for Encryption and Image Format. They both have to be changed from the default choices.
  10. Tap the menu close to and select “128-bit AES encryption (recommended).” If you need more security, select “256-bit AES encryption (more secure, but slower).”
  11. As soon as you have selected your encryption level, a window will be visible that will prompt you to set your password. Tap the key icon to the right of the password to view how secure your password is. In this popup, you can even decide to let the system create a password on your behalf.
  12. Type the password two times and tap Choose to set it as your password. Ensure you do not forget your password. If you do, having access to your files will be impossible.
  13. Tap the menu close to Image Format and select “read/write.”
  14. Tap Save. It will take some time for the application to create a disk image for your folder. Tap Done to exit.
  15. Your original folder will still be present on your Mac, and it will not be encrypted. As soon as you are certain that accessing the disk image and the files is possible, get rid of your original folder.
