How to use FRITZ! Box router with FTTH fiber

FRITZ! Box routers are undoubtedly among the devices, belonging to the category, most purchased and used in Italy. In fact, many also prefer them to the modems offered by the telephone operators themselves along with the various subscriptions required. However, in the event that the offer is of the FTTH type (ie direct fiber to your home), the configuration of the aforementioned router may not be so simple. For this reason, today we are going to see how to do it in a few steps.

Connect the FRITZ! Box router via the operator’s modem

The first useful (and fastest) method to configure the FRITZ! Box router with the FTTH offer is based on the direct connection, and also physical (cascade), to the modem supplied by the telephone operator.

First of all, therefore, it must equip itself with an Ethernet cable, easily found online, or even in the same package of the FRITZ! Box and connect the two modems through the LAN ports on the rear. For convenience, we recommend using ports LAN 1 on both devices. After that, you can proceed with the configuration.

  • Access the user menu dedicated to the management of the modem (changes according to the modem in possession)
  • From the general modem settings, turn off Wi-Fi, Firewall, and NAT
  • Search and access the “DMZ” settings
  • In the screen that appears, enter the IP address of the modem (it is usually recognized automatically)
  • Connect the FRITZ! Box to a computer using a second Ethernet cable
  • Access the configuration panel of the FRITZ! Box modem via the address https://fritz.box (or https://192.168.178.1)
  • From the left column, click on “Internet”
  • Continue with “Access data” and then with “Internet Provider” Select “Other Internet Provider” and check the item “Connection to external modem or router”
  • Activate “Create Internet connection yourself”
  • In the “Access data” section, check the “No”
  • Enter the value 1,000,000 kB/s in the text bar dedicated to “Downstream” and 100,000 kB/s in that of “Upstream”
  • Conclude with “Apply” below

At this point the configuration is complete and the FTTH line can be used correctly with the FRITZ! Box router. Obviously, we remind you that the physical connection between the two modems will be essential and cannot be interrupted for any reason, otherwise, the line will stop working.

Configure the FRITZ! Box router only

Before closing, let’s see how to perform a slower, but also more “elegant” configuration, to use only the FRITZ! Box router as the main modem.

First of all, in the event that the connection is of the “SFP” type (and therefore if the fiber wires reach the operator’s modem directly), it will not be possible in any way to use exclusively the FRITZ! Box router, unless you decide to call the operator to convert the connection from “SFP” to “ONT” (fiber signal arriving from the wall input).

If, on the other hand, the type of connection is already “ONT”, then you can proceed with the configuration.

  • Connect the FRITZ! Box router to the “ONT” wall port (disconnecting the operator’s one first) using an Ethernet cable and the LAN 1 port of the router

At this point, the navigation should be already active, but if the line does not work (or it will be slow), it will be necessary to operate through the router configuration.

  • Access the configuration panel of the FRITZ! Box modem via the address https://fritz.box (or https://192.168.178.1)
  • From the left column, click on “Internet”
  • Continue with “Access data” and then with “Internet Provider”
  • Click on “Connection to external modem or router” and configure the data according to the operator (TIMWindTreVodafoneFastweb)
