Huawei announces 5G smartphones for MWC 2024

Huawei spontaneously invited to a 5G event in Beijing last night and introduced their own 5G modem for smartphones.

This is called Balong 5000 and will usher in Huawei’s 5G era. Incidentally, a new SoC is not needed because the 5G modem is compatible with the Kirin 980, which we have known since the Huawei Mate 20 Pro.

Balong 5000 is the first chipset to perform industry benchmarks for peak 5G download speeds. At sub-6 GHz (low-frequency bands, the main spectrum used for 5G), Balong 5000 can achieve download speeds up to 4.6 Gbps. 4G LTE speeds on the market today.

Huawei’s modem supports the SA and NSA network architecture and is the first of its kind. The Qualcomm X50 modem does not support it. In addition, a router called “Huawei 5G CPE Pro” equipped with 5G modem and Wi-Fi 6 was also shown.

Huawei- First 5G smartphones to MWC

Incidentally, Huawei has already closed more than 30 commercial 5G contracts worldwide and delivered more than 25,000 base stations with 5G. The event also featured a new one called Huawei TIANGANG.

The company emphasized at the event that they were leaders in this area and indirectly responded a bit to the current debate.

As far as the technology “behind the front”, details are in this and in this press release from Huawei. Alternatively, you can look at the one-hour event that I ended up with. I can not recommend, because it is very dry and not translated well.

Huawei also announced a detail in the end- It was only an advance event for the MWC 2019 in one month. There you will introduce the first smartphones with 5G. Means- Huawei will have a new flagship with the Kirin 980 – or a reissue of the Mate 20 Pro?

For us, that probably does not matter much, because the auction of the 5G licenses will start in the spring and I would not bet that the manufacturers are already bringing their 5G models to Germany.
