Huawei Honor Play was launched alongside the Honor 9i budget gaming smartphone we reviewed earlier. The Honor Play got its moment on screen with all of its features displayed for everyone to see. First of all, it comes with a notch and dual rear cameras.
Then the Hisilicon Kirin 970 on the P20 Pro is on-board as well. Furthermore, the graphics processor comes with enhanced GPU Turbo to boost performance. The Histen audio tech is also present, providing 3D game sounds and 7.1 channel virtualization. Lets find out more.
Design
It’s a combination of Metal and Plastic here, both elements came together to form this sleek looking beauty. It sports two antenna lines as well, there’s one on top and another at the bottom corner. There’s a rear fingerprint scanner if you’re too shy to show your face.
Unlike the Honor 10 and 9i, this Play smartphone sports a different camera placement. They remind us of what we saw on the P20, being vertically placed with the LED flash underneath. It measures 7.5mm in thickness and weighs 176g overall, you can also get it in Black, Blue and Violet colors.
Display
The same notched screen on the 9i is present here as well. Although, the screen on the Huawei Honor Play seems bigger and taller. Honor also removed the physical home button at the bottom chin making it less minimal. However, it seems the Honor logo has to go as well.
This device was built around a massive 6.3-inch FHD+ IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen. This is perfect for big screen lovers, it has a sharp resolution of 1080 x 2340 pixels with 409 pixel per inch density. The screen also ditches out a 19:9 aspect ratio and stretches up to 83% screen to body ratio.
Hardware and Software
Under the hood, the Hisilicon Kirin 970 is still in control with an Octa-Core processor and 64-bit CPU architecture. The 8-Cores of processor clocks at a fast speed of 2.4GHz with 10nm process technology. In the graphics department, the Mali-G72 MP12 comes with GPU Turbo tech.
There are two versions in terms of RAM, there’s one with 6GB and another with 4GB, which will be cheaper on shopping stores. Nonetheless, its memory speed clocks at about 1.9GHz with a single storage variant of 64GB. Although, you can upgrade up to 256GB using a memory card. The Huawei Honor Play runs on Android 8.1 Oreo with EMUI 8.2 skin on top.
Camera
It doesn’t come with Huawei’s award winning trio cameras though, the dual 16MP + 2MP camera has f/2.2 + f/2.4 aperture respectively. The cameras has scene recognition for over 500 scenes and it’s powered by the NPU, Kirin’s AI core.
Other features include phase detection autofocus, LED flash, geo-tagging, touch focus, face detection, HDR and panorama. With the Huawei Honor Play, you can record videos of 2160p and 1080p @30fps. While the AI powered 16MP selfie shooter has f/2.0 aperture, 2.0µm pixel size and selfie enhancements.
Battery
Powering the Huawei Honor Play is a 3750mAh non-removable Li-Po battery with fast charging technology. With the fast charging feature, charging the battery from 0% to 100% shouldn’t take up to 1.8 hours.
