The iOS 11 operating system comes with a remarkable batch of new features that make you love your iPad or iPhone even more. One of these features is the Files management app that brings you a new way to manage files not only on your iOS devices but also in cloud services. It serves as a replacement for iCloud Drive and will be available to everyone who has upgraded to iOS 11. In addition to file management on your device, this feature also enables file management in some other cloud services such as Dropbox, Box, and more.
Activate cloud services
By default, once you log in under your iCloud account, it will be associated with your iCloud Drive Files management app. If you have additional apps for enhanced sharing options installed on your iOS device, you can access files stored on your iOS through the Files management app. This means you do not have to run the application at all. To associate these services with your application files, do the following:
- Run the Files management app.
- Select “View”.
- Click “Edit” in the upper right corner of the screen.
- Move the pointer to “On” for the selected services.
- Click Done.
Creating folders and managing files
- Run the Files management app.
- Click “View” -> “iCloud Drive”.
- Click the new folder icon at the top left.
- Name the newly created folder.
- Click Done.
Using the “Drag & Drop” feature in the Files in iOS 11 application
Again with the iOS 11 operating system, Apple is also able to run the “Drag & Drop” feature within the system. This feature makes it possible to use the Files management app as well. With Drag & Drop, you can move files, folders, and move them together.
On iPhones, this feature is only available within Files to transfer files between folders, but iPad owners have a little more options – the “Drag & Drop” feature also works between apps. You can drag a file from one application to the Files management application, drag the application from the Files management app to the Dock, where the application will be easily accessed. This way, you can create workflows and manage multiple iPad apps at once.
Labels and search
An innovative iOS 11 concepts are file marking. The brand-new application Files gives users the ability to tag files and then search them according to the assigned tags. Tags are a group of files with specific familiar characters – properties. For example, you can divide your files into work, personal, or school with colour labels. Here is how to do it:
- Open the Files management app.
- Scroll down to the Brands section.
- Choose “Edit”.
- Tap each tag to assign them their names.
- When finished, click Done.
There you go.
