Smartphone users are never satisfied with a feature of a phone without demanding more. Yes, when the dual camera phone came out it seemed to be all that we would ever need. However, the triple and quad camera phones told us we believed in a lie. There seems to be no limit to the wonder smartphone manufacturers can show us.
Slim phones, lasting batteries, large screens, smaller bezels – these are some of the features that users love in modern smartphones. Most of us want very powerful cameras although not all of us can pay that amount of money to buy a high-end camera phone. And then there is idea of space. Smartphone manufacturers sometimes would like to add more features but there’s just no place to add these features.
That is one thing that gave birth to the pop-up camera features. Because camera need ample space but the battery of the phone had already taken too much, some manufacturers think that putting it out there is good enough.
How have smartphone manufacturers being trying for camera efficiency over the years? For example, Apple has been adding some growth on the back of its phones or adding notches in front of phones to accommodate space for cameras. Now as we know, Apple is the number one phone manufacturer when it comes to good cameras. Since the company knows that high-end cameras are what most savvy phone users care much about, the company has been trying hard on that point since.
So when you look at a pop-up camera and you look at a mobile device that has no pop-up camera, what comes to mind? Some of us certainly see the pop-up camera phone as having something ‘sophisticated’ that the phone with the in-built camera does not have.
What brought about the pop-camera may as well be what is mentioned above – the need for more cameras built on a single smartphone. Think of the iPhone X. It was released in 2024. At the rear of that phone one finds two cameras, one flash but on the front there are several sensors, including an infrared camera, a front illuminator, a dot projector for Face ID, then the actual camera itself. If you followed carefully, you will notice that these features have to be put there by real experts who know what they are doing.
To achieve the feats of creating space, in the past smartphone manufacturers build cameras by having a notch take some space out of the screen or by putting a punch-hole cutout in the screen. The third way is to build out. Huawei, Elephone, and a few other manufacturers are seeing this to be great idea.
Pop-up camera phones look nice. However, the pop-up cameras themselves present real challenges. Are they the future? Some believe yes, while others say no. Already, we know that pop-up cameras wear and tear, they could even break or dust gets into them, they take up extra energy, and these present real challenges. Challenges that make some manufacturers to say that they will try their hands on invisible cameras. They really believe that invisible cameras will have less trouble for the smartphone user.
There are also ways in which to fine tune pop-up cameras and make them work more efficiently. That is the next thing that manufacturers of pop-up camera phones are taking a look at. For now, in 2024, we still expect new pop-up camera phones to arrive with their own good innovation.
