MSI GT62VR 7RE Dominator Pro – Another VR-Ready Gaming Laptop

MSI has continued to remain at the top of its game with every laptop released. And just like their other offerings, 2017’s GT62VR 7RE has a lot of promise that makes it as relevant as it was when originally released. This 7RE version is an improvement over its 2016 edition – the GT62VR 6RE. It is little wonder that this year-old laptop can still handle even the most recent AAA games without batting an eye.

The MSI GT62VR features high-end internals including the popular Core i7-7700HQ and a GTX 1070 graphics chip. When you bring in the 16GB of working memory and a keyboard with RGB backlighting, this notebook begins to evoke a desire. Moreover, a clue from the name hints at the VR capabilities of the system.

Enough of the preamble, let’s dive in and see what makes this fairly old gaming notebook tick.

Design

The GT62VR is a finely-designed notebook. It features a 15-inch display with very noticeable bezels. This upper part – the lid – is connected to the lower half by two small but robust [and maybe durable] hinges. Above the screen is a Full HD webcam enveloped in an inverted triangular glass.

At 40 mm, this laptop is one of the thickest in the gaming laptops category. The notebook has a footprint of 390 x 266 mm and is fairly light at 2.9 kg/6.4 lbs.

There are two speakers positioned at the top of the keyboard on the lower half of the GT62VR.

Display

Next, we take a look at the display. The GT62VR sports a Full HD IPS display which is 15.6 inches diagonally long. The matte display is crisp for viewing and thanks to the GTX 1070 and G-Sync, offers most of the recent games at about 60 fps. However, the screen begins to struggle at sharp angles due to the limited viewing angle.

Keyboard and Touchpad

As with most recent MSI laptops, the GT62VR packs a SteelSeries keyboard with per-key RGB backlighting.  The chiclet-style keyboard has keys with good key travel which makes typing and gaming pleasurable.

The touchpad is sleek enough for uninterrupted gliding. It also supports multi-finger gestures, which is a basic feature for modern touchpads.

Performance

Even though this laptop is a year old, it still packs high-performing hardware components as stated in the introduction. A seventh-generation Intel Core i7 processor clocked at 2.8 GHz is paired with the Nvidia GTX 1070 GPU which together make it easy for the GT62VR to handle virtually anything.

Although there are four RAM slots, only one is fitted with a 16GB chip. The memory can be expanded to a maximum of 64GB. The GT62VR 7RE has two storage types which is now commonplace for gaming notebooks – a primary SSD with 256GB of storage space, and minor 1TB HDD.

When you combine the fast graphics chip, high-performing CPU, and ample memory, the MSI GT62VR is clearly a great laptop that promises no performance lag.

Battery Life

When the lights are out, this laptop is powered by an 8-cell 75Wh Li-ion battery which should deliver ample time before finally going off. However, a battery with many cells does not directly translate into longer battery life. Thus, the GT62VR’s battery can deliver a maximum of about 7 hours on the lowest settings.

Ports and Connectivity

For interfacing with the outside world, the MSI GT62VR features a bevy of ports. This port selection includes three USB 3.0 ports, one USB 2.0 port, one type-C USB port. For connecting with external monitors, users can use the mini DisplayPort or an HDMI port. An SD card slot is also present as well as Killer Gigabit Ethernet port, Killer Wireless Wi-Fi adapter and Bluetooth 4.1.

Price and Availability

The MSI GT62VR 7RE starts at about $2000 and is available on most leading online stores as well as some physical retail stores worldwide.
