Yes! You read that right. There’s absolutely zero mistake in the headline. The legendary, “Crusher of floors”, indestructible “Hammer of Thor”, the “Arnold Schwarzenegger” of devices is coming back.
Though the device was originally “retired” back in 2005, we will however be seeing a return, this year to be precise. The “redefined” 3310 will be amongst the three handsets that will be unveiled by HMD later this month at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain.
While I will try my very best not to express how super excited I am about the news, concluding that majority out there are super-charged about this news is a good guess. Being one of the best-selling mobile phones of all time, the news of a comeback is just something to be thrilled about.
Evan Blass, reliable phone leaker and Venture Beat reporter, broke the news of the device’s return to the world. He also went on to reveal that of the four handsets to be announced by HMD Global Oy (the Finnish manufacturer with exclusive rights to market Nokia phones) at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, the almighty Nokia 3310 is one.
Going by Venture Beat:
“Perhaps the most interesting of these devices, at least from the perspective of mobile enthusiasts, is not a smartphone at all, but a modern version of a classic workhorse of a feature phone, the Nokia 3310. Known primarily for its plentiful battery life and nearly indestructible build, the 3310 was released at the turn of the millennium as a replacement to the also-popular 3210.”
This story has gone viral over the past days. And while a huge chunk of people can’t wait to get their hands on the device whenever it is released, a significant few still opine that it isn’t a comeback. Citing “This phone’s been here for years” as reason.
Details about the device’s specifications are however not known for now, but it is believed that the new Nokia 3310 will be very similar to the original. Also, as it was with the retro version, battery life and build quality will be its focus once again.
Still per Blass, the handset will cost just €59 (approx. $63) and the device will primarily target European markets. Plans for other regions are unknown at this point.
In other news, Nokia will launch another two Android-powered smartphones at the MWC. According to TechnoBuffalo, “They are expected to be named the Nokia 3 and the Nokia 5. The Nokia 5 will reportedly use the same Snapdragon 430 chip as the recently-released Nokia 6 , with a smaller 5.2-inch display, 2GB of RAM, and a 12-megapixel rear-facing camera.”
