Nokia 8 VS Nokia 8 Sirocco – Why the Nokia 8 Sirocco is NOT a worthy successor

Nokia 8 VS Nokia 8 Sirocco – Why the Nokia 8 Sirocco is NOT a worthy successor. Finnish company Nokia released a couple of smartphones during the 2018 Mobile World Congress; The Nokia 1, Nokia 6, Nokia 7 Plus and Nokia 8 Sirocco. While the Nokia 7 Plus is the successor of last year’s Nokia 7. The Nokia 8 Sirocco is succeeding 2017’s Nokia 8, which is a mid-range smartphone. I wonder why Nokia choose to name it “Sirocco”. Why not name it Nokia 8 Plus like they did to Nokia 7 Plus. Or even Nokia 8 Pro. “Sirocco” basically means a “draft of hot air from an artificial source of heat”.

Should we now say the Nokia 8 Sirocco is the draft of hot air from Nokia 8? Lol. But seriously is the Nokia 8 Sirocco a true upgrade to the Nokia 8? Why don’t you stick around with me, while I compare the two smartphones? After which I would have an answer for you if the Nokia 8 Sirocco is a worthy successor 🙂

Nokia 8 VS Nokia 8 Sirocco – The Design

A big difference between the Nokia 8 and Nokia 8 Sirocco is “glass”. The Nokia 8 comes in an aluminum body and frame with glass only at the front. While the Nokia 8 Sirocco features glass at the front, back and even the frame along with stainless steel. Not just any type of glass but Corning gorilla glass 5. That’s a pretty big upgrade from the Nokia 8.

The Nokia 8 Sirocco measures 7.5mm in thickness. Making it slimmer than the Nokia 8 which measures 7.9mm. The 3.5mm headphone port found in the Nokia 8 has been ditched in the Nokia 8 Sirocco. The Nokia 8 is splash proof with an IP57 certified rating. While the Nokia 8 Sirocco is water/dust proof with an IP67 certified rating.

The fingerprint sensor of the Nokia 8 is embedded in its home button. While the Nokia 8 Sirocco features no home button, the fingerprint sensor is rear-mounted. Both smartphones have the rear camera set up at the top-middle. The LED flash of the Nokia 8 is below the dual rear camera. While that of the Nokia 8 Sirocco is at the right side of the dual rear camera. The Nokia 8 Sirocco comes in only Black body color. While the Nokia 8 is available in Tempered Blue, Polished Blue, Steel and Polished Copper body colors.

Nokia 8 VS Nokia 8 Sirocco – The Display

The Nokia 8 is not bezel-less, with large bezels at the top and bottom. The smartphone houses a 5.3 inch IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen. While the Nokia 8 Sirocco features a 5.5-inch P-OLED capacitive touchscreen. Nokia used the same display resolution of the Nokia 8 for the Nokia 8 Sirocco. They both feature a display resolution of 1440 x 2560 pixels. The Nokia 8; thanks to its small screen size has a 554 PPI density. While the Nokia 8 Sirocco has a 534 PPI density. Both phone’s screen is protected by Corning gorilla glass 5.

Nokia 8 VS Nokia 8 Sirocco – The Camera

Now this will be a tricky department for these two phones. Based by numbers, i don’t really think there’s an upgrade here. The Nokia 8’s dual camera features a resolution of 13MP f/2.0 aperture and 13MP f/2.0 aperture. While the Nokia 8 Sirocco’s dual camera houses a resolution of 12MP f/1.8 aperture and 12MP f/2.6 aperture. We would need a practical test to know which is better here.

But in the front camera, the Nokia 8 features a 13MP f/2.0 aperture. Which is better than the 5MP f/2.0 aperture found in the Nokia 8 Sirocco’s front camera.

Nokia 8 VS Nokia 8 Sirocco – Hardware and Software

The hardware of both phones is the same, which makes me wonder where is the upgrade. They’re both powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chipset. Which carries an 8-cores processor clocking at 2.5GHz. The Nokia 8 Sirocco runs on the latest Android 8.0 Oreo. While the Nokia 8 runs on Android 7.1.1 Nougat but is upgradable to Android 8.1 Oreo.

The Nokia 8 Sirocco comes in a standard 6GB RAM with 128GB ROM. While the Nokia 8 offers two variants; 4GB RAM with 64GB ROM and 6GB RAM with 128GB ROM.

Nokia 8 VS Nokia 8 Sirocco – The Battery

The Nokia 8 Sirocco packs a non-removable Li-Ion 3260 mAh battery. While the Nokia 8 packs a non-removable Li-Ion 3090 mAh battery. They both offer fast battery charging, with the Nokia 8 Sirocco features Qi wireless charging.

Nokia 8 VS Nokia 8 Sirocco – The Price

The Nokia 8 is available for about $480 (N168,000). While the Nokia 8 Sirocco goes for around $900 (N315,000). Overall, the Nokia 8 Sirocco is an upgrade to the Nokia 8. But it doesn’t justify the heavy price tag on the Nokia 8 Sirocco. The Nokia 8 match up well against the Nokia 8 Sirocco in Display, Camera and Hardware departments. The Nokia 8 Sirocco is not a worthy successor in my honest opinion.
