If the Notes app on your iPhone is anything like the one on mine, then it’s definitely a mess. Even with the addition of folders, adding note after notes can really get things cluttered up. You need a way you can use to quickly identify the notes that are most important and that is where pinning comes in.

Pinning the notes you want to keep track of in the Notes app is easy — you just might want to do it the right way to prevent losing them in a sea of thoughts and to-dos. Let us say you just wrote an important note or you already have an existing note you know you want to be easy to access. You can pin the note in one of two ways.

  1. Open the Notes app on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Find the note you wish to pin and then make a quick long swipe gesture on it from left to right and then release.
  3. If you did it right, the note will be pinned to the top of the folder. If you swipe the note from left to right slowly and let go, an orange pin icon will come up on the left side of the note.
  4. Now, you can tap on the pin icon to pin the note.

Alternatively, if your iPhone supports 3D Touch, you can soft-press to “peek” at the note and then make a quick swipe gesture without releasing your finger to access a menu of options. Now, you need to tap on “Pin Note.” The note will be pinned at the top of the folder it is located.

Once notes are pinned, they have their own subtle Pinned section up top, separates from all the other notes below. You can find this section in the folder whose pinned notes are contained in, as well as in the “All [Account Name]” folder, where you can find all notes connected to a specific account (iCloud, Gmail, On My iPhone, etc.).

If you want to unpin a Note, simply perform any of the actions you used to pin it above. Swiping fast will unpin the note immediately but a slow swipe will give you the unpin button and using 3D Touch will replace the “Pin Note” option with “Unpin.” If you have unpinned all the notes in a folder, the Pinned section will disappear.

  1. Unfortunately, Apple neglected to add support for the pinned Notes feature on iCloud.com. When viewing the Notes application on the web, there is no pinned functionality. Add this to the even bigger problem that iCloud sync is horribly unreliable.
