Royole Flexipai World’s First Foldable Smartphone Review, Price, Design, Performance Specs

Huawei has not released it, neither has Samsung done it. But it is Royole that did it. The world’s first foldable smartphone is here. Royole Flexipai is no longer a concept, it is real. On the last day of October 2018, this foldable smartphone was unveiled by the Chinese company. It is an actual Android smartphone that anyone can order online now.

On the company’s website, we saw that the Flexipai smartphone makes use of Royole’s second-generation fully flexible display. In this review, we will take a look at salient aspects of Flexipai. These will include the design, display, camera, performance, and battery features of the device.

Design and Display of Flexipai

Flexipai is 7.8 inches when it is unfolded. It is about as big as iPad mini. The screen has pixels resolution 1920 x 1440 resolution and a 4:3 aspect ratio. Display type is HD+ and it comes with a thickness of 7.6mm.

However, when folded, the smartphone turns into a dual-screen device that has three screens. The primary screen is pixels resolution of 810 x 1440 with 16:9 aspect ratio, the secondary screen is 720 x 1440 with aspect ratio 18:9, and the edge display features 390 x 1440 resolution and aspect ratio is 21:6.

It doesn’t look as if the device can fit into the pocket even when folded.

Camera Features

In the camera department, Flexipai features dual-lens camera to include 20 MP telephoto lens and a 16 MP wide-angled lens. In this device, the same camera used for selfies can also be used for rear camera. The dual view camera mode enables the object to be snapped visible on each side of the screen when the device is folded.

Another nice feature is the AI enhancement that allows the user to make a shot perfect before snapping it. This eliminates multiple shots.

Hardware and Software

A report also revealed that the device comes in next-gen Qualcomm Snapdragon 8150 processor. However, Royole did not mention that on their website. So, we may say that this Flexipai is the first smartphone in the world to make use of Qualcomm’s new flagship processor.

Network and Connectivity in Flexipai

As far connectivity is concerned, the device features USB-C port but has no headphone jack.

Storage Capacity

Right now there is the 6GB/8GB of RAM but actually, there are three variants as there are 128GB/256GB/512GB of ROM or internal storage. Users can still increase external storage with a microSD card. An amazing thing is that Flexipai has been tested to withstand more than 200,000 open and shut movements.

Battery Life

Powering the device is a 3800 mAh battery that comes with Ro Charge, which suggests that the device has fast charging technology. Royole claims that the device can charge from 0 to 80 percent in 1 hour and 40 percent faster with efficiency rating of 94 percent and also it has a 3-layers of protection.

Price and Availability

Right now in the United States, it is just the 128GB and the 256GB of internal storage variants that are on preorder. Consequently, these are priced at $1,318 USD and $1,469 USD respectively. Preorders are said to be ready to start shipping sometime in December 2018.
