Royole FlexPai – First foldable smartphone comes from China

So far, Samsung and LG have a race about who will present the first foldable smartphone. Now, however, comes before them a Chinese manufacturer – The 7.8-inch smartphone-tablet hybrid called Royole FlexPai was officially announced and can even be ordered by developers.

In the middle of November, Samsung wants to give us a first look at its own foldable smartphone. LG’s model is expected to follow at CES 2019. But the first foldable smartphone-tablet hybrid now comes from the Chinese brand Royole, which had previously mainly VR headsets with curved displays on offer.

With the Royole FlexPai you now venture the step into the mobile market and impressed directly with innovation. It uses a flexible 7.8-inch display with 1,920 x 1,440 pixels, the surface of which consists of a plastic substrate. As a result, the device can be folded on a centrally mounted hinge, in order to use, for example, only one half of the display. So really compact is the FlexPai collapsed then but not – this is the bending radius on the hinges just too big.

In general, the concept of the FlexPai looks, at first glance, even more after a feasibility study than after a final product for the mass market. As can be seen in the first videos of the presentation, the surface of the display, for example, is quite wavy and thus reflects stronger than usual.

Royole FlexPai comes with Snapdragon 8150

In doing so, Royole really bothers with the equipment of the FlexPai. The smartphone-tablet hybrid will be released on board with, among other things, the new Snapdragon 8150, 6 or 8 GB RAM and up to 512 GB of internal memory. In addition, there is a 3.800 mAh strong battery and a dual camera on the front. The back was not installed, because you can fold those from the front just back.

The Royole FlexPai, which comes along with its own Android variant called WaterOS, can be ordered in China by developers at prices between the equivalent of approximately € 1,140 and € 1,640. An international availability is probably not provided for now.
