For the past few days, I have been trying to perfect my hands on taking portrait selfies. Well, I must admit that I have shot some of the coolest selfies ever.

Of course, my selfies had never looked so appealing before. With different Portrait Lighting modes available, you can fine-tune your selfies however you wish.

How to Capture Portrait Selfie on iPhone X

  1. Open the Camera app on your iPhone X.
  2. Next, swipe to access the Portrait button and then tap on it.
  3. Now, you need to tap on the Camera Swap button to switch to the selfie camera.
  4. Next up, select Portrait Lighting effect.

There are five options you can choose from:

Portrait Lighting feature to apply four impressive studio-quality lighting effects to your Portrait mode images.

  • Natural Light – This mode blurs the background of your selfie for high contrast.
  • Studio Light – This mode allows you to brighten up facial features.
  • Contour Light – This mode offers dramatic directional lighting.
  • Stage Light – This mode allows you to completely separate your subject in the spotlight.
  • Stage Mono – This mode lets you isolate your subject in the spotlight in classic black and white.

  1. Select the potrait lighting mode you want.
  2. Now, follow the prompts the Camera app displays. For example, the app will say “Place subject within 8 feet,” “More light required” and “Move farther away” etc
  3. After you are done following the instructions, the colour of banner at the bottom of the screen will change to yellow.
    • Note – You can still take selfies even if the banner doesn’t turn yellow. However, the selfies taken will not have lighting effects.
  4. Finally, tap on the shutter button to take your selfie.

That is all! Now go on and check the selfie. Does it look nice?

If you do not like the selfie that was taken, you can still use any of the other lighting effects while editing to make it look better. Read on to learn how.

How to Edit Portrait Photos on iPhone X

You can edit your portrait photos and you can change the lighting effect while editing.

  1. Open the Photos app on your iPhone X
  2. Next, tap on the Portrait mode photo you want to edit and then tap on Edit.
  3. Now, you have to tap on the cube in the bottom centre of the screen to bring up the lighting menu.
  4. Next up, you need to swipe on the cubes to change the lighting option of your photo.
  5. When you are done editing, tap on Done to save your settings and confirm the change.

How to Remove the Portrait Mode Effect on iPhone X

If you took a photo in Portrait mode but you no longer want the depth effect on the photo, you can easily remove the lighting effect. Follow the steps below.

  1. Open the Photos app on your iPhone X.
  2. Next, tap on the Portrait mode photo you want to edit and then tap on Edit.
  3. Next, tap on Portrait at the top of the screen and then tap on Done.

If you ever wish to add the Portrait mode effect to the photo again, simply follow the steps above and tap on Portrait again.

How to Revert Portrait Photos to Original on iPhone X

You can also revert portrait photos to the original on your iPhone X. When you do this, all the edits you have made to the photo wll be removed. Its important, however, that you note that this action cannot be undone and all edits you had previously made on the portrait photo will be permanently lost. If you wish to proceed, follow the steps below.

  1. Open the Photos app on your iPhone X.
  2. Next, tap on the Portrait mode photo and then tap on Edit.
  3. Tap on Revert in the bottom right corner of the screen and then tap on Revert to Original to confirm the action.
