Vkworld MIX Plus Review – a bezel-less phone with dual 2.5D Gorilla Glass

As you know, the current trend in smartphones is designed without bezels. This trend driven by the Chinese giant Xiaomi is causing other Chinese companies to manufacture their phones with this design. In the past, we have already been able to make several reviews to some such as the Blackview S8, Vernee MIX 2, Leagoo KIICAA MIX, Xiaomi Mi MIX 2 or the same Xiaomi Mi MIX launched almost a year ago, have given way to a true trend that try to emulate an innovative design in Smartphones that comes in the form of a screen that covers almost all the available surface, with small frames and a great immersion when using multimedia contents. Today we bring you another review of a phone that follows this same trend; it is Vkworld MIX Plus, a mid-range device with a 5.5-inch screen and other extremely attractive features.

This Vkworld MIX Plus comes in a box with dimensions of 16.50 x 9.70 x 4.20 cm and weights 365 grams. Within this white box, we have the standard that usually comes in these packages, as well as other additional accessories. They include:

When we see the packaging, it shows us immediately that we are dealing with an economical device, since it is presented in a white cardboard that only shows the company’s logo. However, the accessories looks quite incomplete, since in addition to finding the Vkworld MIX Plus itself, we have a USB cable, a European plug charger with 1.5V / 1A output, a SIM ejector that will facilitate the SIM card removal, a user manual in English, a warranty card, a transparent soft silicone cover and a protective plastic film, which can be placed on top of the screen as a protection method; all these without an earpiece.

Vkworld MIX Plus Design

One of the first sensations that will occur when holding this phone for the first time will be related to its lightweight, which is just 165 grams. The frame is made of opaque aluminum, while the front and back of the phone are covered with 2.5D Corning Gorilla Glass. We must say that it has a very attractive and quite impressive design, especially the back part that is made of glass. Among the available colors, we have purplish blue and black, of which purplish blue looks much beautiful.

As we mentioned, its design is “without bezels,” but in fact, there is about 2mm of bezel around it. Something that also impresses is the upper bezel that basically extends the screen to this part leaving a minimum space for the speaker.

There is a main camera located on the back of the device, which has just a lens and a flash just beside the main camera; a reasonably standard configuration in smartphones but would have to prefer to see it come with dual cameras in order to help take better pictures.

The fingerprint sensor can also be found at the bottom of the camera lens. As for the fingerprint scanner, we can say that it is quite accurate and reliable. If we talk a little more about this fingerprint scanner, we have that it is quite good being able to unlock the phone in 0.1 seconds with almost 97% success rate. Also, you can store up to 5 different fingerprints and recognize them all at 360 degrees. In the front, we have a front camera in the lower center bezel.

Thanks to the design, we can understand that the Vkworld Mix Plus wants to remember the superior distribution of the Xiaomi devices, since it comes with square lines in the parts where the volume control and the on/off button are located. With regard to the slot for the SIM card, it is located on the left side of the phone. In the upper part, we find the 3.5mm connector for the headphones and the micro USB port with OTG support. In the lower part, of the device when placed facing up, we find the microphone and speakers (ho! I meant speaker), which are both on the right side of the device, while on the left is just a grill design without a speaker.

The Vkworld MIX Plus has a hybrid card slot located on the left side of the phone. It accepts two types of SlIM – Nano SIM + Micro SIM and SDcard at the same time.

Vkworld MIX Plus Screen

This phone has a size screen of 5.5 inches with a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels (HD), that is somewhat standard nowadays, with 320 dpi, a viewing angle of 175 °, a brightness of 580 nits and is covered by a Corning Gorilla Glass. The screen extends to almost the entire body (90%, to be more precise), to the bottom of the device, which has a sensor proximity and selfies camera located in a superior part.

Its size compared to the Mi MIX is better, resulting in smaller dimensions of 1430 x 740 x 89mm and a total weight of 165 grams. The back screen is a print magnet; it easily attracts prints from fingers and dirt when the phone is used for a long time. However, there is a soft transparent silicone cover that increases grip and protects the screen from scratches and prints that may be printed on the back of the device.

In general, the 5.5-inch panel is quite decent, offers excellent colour reproduction and a good contrast considering its price range. Also, it is a Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection.

Vkworld MIX Plus Hardware and Performance

The Vkworld MIX Plus has a 64–bit quad-core MediaTek MT6737 processor working at a frequency of 1.3 GHz. Accompanying the processor, we have an ARM Mali-T720 MP2 GPU. As for the memory, we have that it has 3GB of RAM that helps keep it in the activities, rare cases where there is some delay.

Regarding the user experience, we must say that it is decent with minimal delays and we mentioned earlier that multitasking is quite good. But, if we go to the numbers we have that the Vkworld MIX Plus obtained pretty decent reference results. It got 29407 points in AnTuTu, being a quite typical result for this type of processors when it is combined with the rest of the hardware (RAM, GPU).

On the other hand, we have got 567 points in the one core test and 1580 points in the multi-core in Geekbench. This translates into a lack of compliance at the highest level, but still all the classic tasks such as Internet browsing, the use of social networks, messaging and other apps are guaranteed without any difficulty, even with sessions of “heavy” games such as Real Racing 3, where the graphic details are reproduced comprehensively, although sometimes there are drops in the fps.

Finally, we have 32 GB of internal storage by Samsung, so for an average user, it’s more than enough. But we can also expand this space using a microSD card of up to 256 GB.

Vkworld MIX Plus Software

Like most of its Chinese rivals, the Vkworld MIX Plus has the Android 7.0 operating system with a graphical personalization that bears some resemblance to the one of the Xiaomi device. In fact, even the animations, as well as the icons, seem to be taken directly from the original, creating a satisfactory visual effect. In any case, using Android 7.0 will allow you to have more control over the phone, as well as a more flexible personalization.

Fortunately, it does not have any bloatware or other unnecessary applications in its interior; it supports all the Nougat (Android 7.0) classic features with at least Google Maps pre-installed, of course, we can install any other apps that we want.

Among the added personalization features we have gestures to facilitate some operations, such as turning on the screen with a double touch or also lovely features such as Super Screen Capture and BluLightMode.

With games that are simpler or in any case, with a reduction in energy and performance requirements, the experience is undoubtedly great. Unfortunately, under stress conditions, the  Vkworld MIX Plus is so annoying to keep it in your hand, although the overall fluidity remains unchanged. The RAM seems to be good considering that when starting the phone we have around 2.05 GB available.

Unfortunately, the quality of the audio during a call is not the best, since it creates a tunnel effect in the upper speaker and gives the feeling that we are talking to a person far away from the phone. Hands-free audio is better, but it seems that the microphone does not help much in this circumstance since it also shows a distance effect. With regard to listening to music or videos, the speakers seem to work well with an adequate volume.

The consolation is that at least with the headphones these problems disappear, and even listening to music the smartphone manages to amaze. Thanks to the integration of AAC technology that reduces background noise and increases the overall volume.

With regard to images, whether movies or video games, these are reproduced faithfully, and the enjoyment of multimedia content is truly rewarding. The MiraVision function is present at the software level, which further reduces the contrast and colour temperature.

Vkworld MIX Plus Camera

The Vkworld MIX Plus does not follow the current trend for the incorporation of the dual rear camera, but we have got an incredible 13 megapixels camera and a fingerprint sensor arranged vertically with a LED flash on the rear. The back 13 megapixels camera can capture images in good lighting conditions good enough if we compare them with the sale price of the device. It as well offers the ability to record videos of 1280 x 720 pixels at 30 fps that suffer from lack of autofocus, so we must touch the screen to focus on what matters most. However, this will lead to an additional negative consequence that translates into bad colours and inaccurate management in the shade when we make a recording.

For all those Snapchat fans that exist, the Vkworld MIX Plus comes with a selfie camera (front) of 8 megapixels. We can take the classic selfies, as long as we are in lighted areas. In clubs or low-light places, you will not be impressed.

In general, the image quality can be quite good under the right conditions, but some aspects that should be improved.

Finally, the autofocus in the photo mode is quite fast, although it must be said that the facial beauty function is definitely useless, returning a result worthy of the worst photo editing program.

Vkworld MIX Plus Battery

This phone is equipped with a non removable 2850mAh capacity battery. It must be said that it does not fit very much in this device, since it does not allow us to spend the day before running out of energy after about 12 hours of continuous use in standard mode with chatting, playing games, without making use of energy savings.

At first, I think the phone battery will be horrible, but it turns out that the battery was not as bad as I thought it would be when compared with other smartphones using almost similar battery. This is because Vkworld has done a great work by excluding all battery consuming apps from the phone.

Also, keep in mind that it works wonderfully in cooperation with the Android interface to block vampire applications “thirsty” for energy, reduce energy consumption when possible and all those small features that make our lives easier when using a phone.

However, the phone does not have fast charging technology therefore, charging the phone from 0% to 100% will take a long period of time.

Conclusions

Definitely, what we liked most about the Vkworld MIX Plus was its attractive design that made us relive the experience of having Xiaomi Mi MIX in our hands, good RAM and ROM, features added to the operating system and good overall performance. Despite being a phone inspired by the Xiaomi Mi MIX, the Vkworld MIX Plus is an excellent Smartphone at a very low price. There are some negative aspects to consider – no NFC, the camera is not the best, excessive overheating, low-quality battery and low-level audio.

The bezel-less 5.5-inch screen is good enough, although if it had a better resolution, it would have been perfect. In addition, whether we are surfing the web, watching movies, reading a book or playing a game, this screen enhances a pleasant experience.

Finally, the dimensions it has are perfect to carry in your pocket, and the weight is not excessive, and the connections are quite standard. So we can say that this phone is really worth acquiring.
