WhatsApp Introduces “WhatsApp Status”, Share Picture and Video Status Updates

WhatsApp today announced that it was reinventing the status feature on the most popular and widely used messenger app. WhatsApp will be rolling out an update to users to enable them enjoy the new status feature.

What this new update brings to your app is that it allows you to share photos and videos with your friends and contacts on WhatsApp in an easy and secure way. More like what you see or do on Snapchat. And yes, did I mention that the picture and status updates are end-to-end encrypted? Apparently not. Well, they are.

The encryption of status updates is one major differentiating factor the revamped WhatsApp status have from Snapchat and Instagram story feature. This in itself may and will draw the attention of more users who take security so dearly.

Video and pictorial status are secure and you, interestingly, have control over who sees your video and picture status updates. Just like it has always been with the usual word or text-based status.

To further prove that this new “WhatsApp status” update from WhatsApp took major inspiration from WhatsApp, let’s look at the shelf life of the status updates. Oh yes, stories (or should I say status updates) have a validity period too!

Videos and pictures shared or uploaded as status will disappear and will no longer be visible to those granted access to view after 24 hours.

The unveiling of the new “WhatsApp status” feature comes as WhatsApp prepare for its 8th Birthday anniversary.

According to WhatsApp,

“We are excited to announce that, coinciding with WhatsApp’s 8th birthday on February 24, we are reinventing the status feature. Starting today, we are rolling out an update to status, which allows you to share photos and videos with your friends and contacts on WhatsApp in an easy and secure way. Yes, even your status updates are end-to-end encrypted.”

“Just like eight years ago when we first started WhatsApp, this new and improved status feature will let you keep your friends who use WhatsApp easily updated in a fun and simple way. From all of us at WhatsApp, we hope you enjoy it!”

The feature is rolling out across Europe only this week and will be made available to other regions in coming weeks.

To be honest, I can’t wait to have a feel.. Same over there?
