Xiaomi Mi 8 Pro was introduced at the company’s 8th year anniversary event in China today alongside the Mi 8. The Mi 8 Explorer Edition will also be known as Mi 8 Pro outside China. The Explorer Edition brings so many advanced features, including the in-display fingerprint scanner we saw on the Vivo X21 UD.
This premium version comes with the trending notched screen and a transparent back which lets you see the hardware, including Qualcomm’s most powerful chipset the Snapdragon 845. It comes with the 3D Face ID technology we saw on the Mi 8. Lets find out more.
Design
Xiaomi brought its A game in terms of design here, the Mi 8 Pro sports a see-through back panel that gives a sneak peek to the internals of the device, you’ll get to see the Snapdragon 845 live and direct. The MI logo is at its usual position, same with the dual rear camera.
There’s no rear fingerprint scanner on the Mi 8 Pro because of the see-through back panel, the scanner has been moved to the screen. It measures the same 7.6 mm in thickness but its slightly heavier weighing in at 177g. There’s no color options here, just Black with transparent back.
Display
Just like the initial Mi 8, the Mi 8 Pro comes with the trending notched screen as well, this flows with the current trend in the smartphone world. The notch here is quite busy i must say, housing the selfie camera, proximity sensor, earpiece, infrared lens and lighting. It seems the bottom bezel came out to play as well.
Apart from the in-display fingerprint scanner, details on the screen are still the same. The 6.21-inch Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen boasts of 1080 x 2248 pixels in resolution, 402 pixel per inch density and stretches up to 83.8% screen-to-body ratio. The screen has HDR10 complaint, DCI-P3 and a Corning Gorilla Glass 5 on top.
Hardware and Software
The Snapdragon 845 chip runs the race here with an Octa-Core processor and 64-bit CPU architecture. The 8-Cores of processor here runs at a blazing speed of 2.8GHz with 10nm FinFET process technology. The Adreno 630 graphics processor controls graphics here.
There’s just one version in terms of RAM and storage space, it has 8GB of RAM and 128GB storage space. The RAM has a memory speed of 1.8GHz for fast and smooth multitasking, while the 128GB storage variant can’t be upgraded further. The Xiaomi Mi 8 Pro runs on Android 8.1 Oreo with the new MIUI 10.
Camera
The same dual shooters on the Mi 8 that scored 99 points on DXOMark is available here. The dual 12MP + 12MP rear shooter on the Xiaomi Mi 8 has f/1.8 and f/2.4 aperture respectively. The first 12MP on top has 1/2.55″ sensor size, 1.4µm pixel size, 4-axis OIS and dual-pixel PDAF. While the 12MP shooter below the dual-LED flash has 1/3.4″ sensor size and 1.0µm pixel size.
Both cameras are AI powered and offers 2x optical zoom, dual pixel phase detection autofocus, geo-tagging, touch focus, face detection, HDR and panorama. Record videos of 2160p@60fps and 1080p@30/240fps, while the 20MP selfie shooter on the notch has f/2.0 aperture, 1.8µm pixel size and takes AI portrait selfies with its AI beautify technology.
Battery
Powering the Xiaomi Mi 8 Pro is a 3000mAh non-removable Li-Po battery with fast charging technology. With the fast charging feature, charging the battery from 0% to 100% shouldn’t take up to 1.5 hours.
