Downloaded Does Not Mean Opened, Installed or Checked

The browser says a download completed, but the expected app has not appeared. Downloading usually transfers a file; what happens next depends on the file type and the action you choose.

Find the file before repeating the download

Inspect the browser’s download entry and location. Mozilla’s guide to managing Firefox downloads explains how to locate and manage downloaded items.

A browser’s list is not the same thing as the file stored on your device. Check the actual location rather than assuming that clearing a history entry or closing the browser removed the downloaded file.

Identify the intended next step

A document may open in a viewer. An archive may need extraction. An installer may request a separate installation process. Do not run an unfamiliar file simply to discover which category it belongs to.

Verify the source and use the publisher’s instructions. A completed transfer does not establish that the file is trustworthy or compatible with your device.

Describe the state accurately

When asking for help, say whether the file downloaded, opened, extracted or installed, and include the exact error at the step that failed.

Our note on file extensions and conversion helps avoid another false shortcut. Changing a name does not perform the missing operation.
