Aorus – a Gigabyte subsidiary – is well-known for releasing exciting gaming notebooks and some of which come in various configurations. The X7 DT v7 is a high-end gaming laptop that packs some of the best features you can find in a notebook.
This gaming notebook has been suitably named (DT for Desktop) to reflect the fact that it was designed to offer desktop-level performance. This is evident in the high-end Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 GPU and a seventh-generation Intel Core i7 CPU with TurboBoost.
Design
Firstly, the Aorus X7 DT v7 is a nicely built gaming device. Owing to its large 17-inch display, the laptop has a large footprint of 428 x 305 mm. Measuring a maximum of 25.4 mm thickness, the X7 DT is quite slim for its size. This slimness is also well complemented with the slightly lightweight 3.2 kg package.
The chassis of this notebook is made mostly of metal with a matte finish. Atop the lid is an Aorus hawk logo which is backlit. Thanks to the long single hinge on this laptop, it is quite easy to lift the lid using only one finger and allows for a maximum 135 degrees opening.
For effective cooling, the Aorus X7 DT v7 has air vents at both sides of the lower half which also house the numerous connectivity ports.
Display
A 17.3-inch display with QHD resolution (2560 x 1440 pixels) adorns the Aorus X7 DT v7 – there’s also a more expensive model with a 4K resolution display. The panel is a matte one and based on TN technology with a 120 Hz refresh rate. The quick response times and high brightness makes this display a delight for gamers. However, the major detractors are the poor viewing angles, low contrast ratio, and average color accuracy.
Keyboard and Touchpad
Given that this is a 17-inch laptop, having a full-size keyboard is not a problem. The island-style keyboard has well-spaced keys and is similar to the Aorus X5’s keyboard. Key travel for the keys is 1.6mm with an actuation force of about 70 grams that ensure a good typing or gaming experience.
The keys have RGB backlighting and each key’s backlight can be customized based on user preference. The customization can be done via the pre-installed Aorus Fusion software. Furthermore, there is a column of macro keys on the left side of the keyboard.
The X7’s touchpad is similarly great with the usual Aorus hawk logo atop it. The touchpad’s glass surface is smooth and highly responsive with a premium look & feel. As a Clickpad, there are no buttons on this touchpad which is usual in modern laptops.
Performance
As previously stated, the Aorus X7 DT v7 is produced with the aim of delivering desktop-level performance. The use of a seventh-generation Core i7 CPU is a testament to this. This high-performing processor is clocked at 2.9GHz with the capacity to reach 3.9GHz via TurboBoost.
The CPU is complemented by a GTX 1080 GPU (with 8GB VRAM). The notebook comes with 16GB DDR4 RAM which can be upgraded to 64GB.
Moving on, the storage combination in this laptop comprises a main 256GB SSD and a secondary 1TB HDD.
Battery Life
The X7 DT v7 houses a 94.24Wh battery. This large capacity battery unavoidably adds to the overall weight of the laptop. On the lowest settings, this laptop can last for about 4 hours which is somewhere around average.
Ports and Connectivity
Several connectivity ports fill the sides of the Aorus X7 DT v7. This port selection includes two type-C USB ports (with only one supporting Thunderbolt 3), an Ethernet port, HDMI 2.0, SD card reader, Kensington Lock, a mini DisplayPort, and four USB 3.0 ports.
For wireless connections, there’s a Killer Wireless-AC with Bluetooth 4.1.
Price and Availability
Pricing for the Aorus X7 DT v7 begins at $2400 and can be gotten from leading online retailers and physical stores worldwide.

Conclusion
It is noteworthy to state here that most notebook displays rarely have a 120Hz refresh rate which the Aorus X7 DT v7 comes with. Asides from this, the fairly slim design, high-performing hardware components, and abundance of ports are the other highlights of this laptop. The major detractor is the poor battery life.
