Instagram is testing a new method hidden in the settings screen to allow users to request verification of their identity directly from the platform, which serves those who want to have the verification badge for their profile or the ‘blue check‘ beside their name. This is what the Australian publication Nine reports.
After submitting the request, the company examines it and, if it accepts, activates the blue check symbol for the profile.
Currently, the option to request verification of their identity directly from the platform is available only for a limited number of users ‘testers’ but should arrive in the next few weeks for everyone.
Instagram introduced verification badges in 2014 to help people find famous people, public figures, and brands they want to follow more easily. The verification badge is the blue check that appears next to the name of the Instagram account in searches and on the profile and serves to indicate that Instagram has confirmed that it is the authentic account of who it represents.
Verified accounts are analyzed as part of our efforts to ensure that the Instagram experience remains authentic. Although Instagram does not proactively monitor changes to verified accounts, it may cancel the verified status if an account publishes spam or other content that does not comply with the community guidelines, uses the profile picture, the name or the Biography section to promote other services or does not remain public.
Until the introduction of the option to request verification of their identity directly from the platform, only a few famous personalities, public figures, and brands had verification badges, it was not possible to request or purchase a verification badge. Accounts without a verification badge could let people know that they are authentic in other ways, for example by referring to the Instagram profile from the official website, Facebook page or Twitter account.
