People think RAM = Performance! Is it true?

Adding more RAM is not necessarily a step towards a world full of performance improvements! As I said several times, everything will depend on your use case. However, it is undeniable that it can help, if you have little RAM, slow memory, or an old machine needing new parts to gain a good boost in your day to day tasks.

First of all, bear in mind that RAM is not the only factor that increases your PC’s performance! We also have the processor and graphics card, which tend to be much more relevant in this regard, as long as you have the right amount of memory for your machine.

People think RAM = Performance! Is it true?

So, if you happen to be playing GTA V with only 2GB of RAM, you will obviously notice improvements if you install another 2GB of memory. The same will happen if you move to a total of 8GB, and less noticeably, you will also notice some performance gains if you move to 16GB. However, from here on, things change a little.

In the end, it will reach a point where adding more RAM will make less and less difference, something that even has a name, ‘Diminishing returns’.

That is, going from 8GB to 16GB will not make as much difference as going from 4GB to 8GB. Of course, changing from 16GB to 32GB will make even less of a difference. That is why all systems have to have a balance between their components since you can have more performance gains if you invest less in RAM and more in the CPU and/or GPU.

In short, again, everything will depend on how you use your machine! Nowadays, for gaming, 8GB is the minimum, with 16GB still being the ‘sweet spot’. Something that in addition to gaming, will also have a strong impact on the multi-tasking of your machine. With more RAM you can have more Chrome tabs open, as well as more programs running in parallel.

RAM speed and Timings also matter!

If you happen to have an AMD Ryzen machine, you know that the MHz and Timings of your RAM memory have some impact on the performance of your PC. Therefore, it is also necessary to keep in mind these two fields, before buying the new memory of your PC.

Similarly, it is always a good idea to put at least 2 memory sticks to take advantage of the dual-channel, which basically doubles the bandwidth of the RAM installed on your motherboard. (Dual Channel is the functionality that allows the chipset or processor to communicate over two channels simultaneously.)
