This year Chinese manufacturer Xiaomi stunned the world when they announced their first gaming laptops in March. Although they’ve been into the laptop game for quite some while now, this is, however, their first attempt into the exclusive gaming laptops segment.

Their new laptop “the Mi gaming laptop” comes equipped with some high-end features that are reminiscent of most modern gaming laptops.

Design

Xiaomi used a standard rectangular design with slightly curved edges for its gaming laptop. This stylish design gives the laptop a conventional notebook look, rather than what you’d find on most gaming laptops.

The chassis for this laptop is made of aluminum that leaves a premium look. The keyboard [which we’ll talk about later is another outstanding feature of the Mi gaming laptop. Dimensions for this laptop are 364 x 265.2 x 20.9 mm and weighs 2.7 kg.

Display

The Mi Gaming laptop sports a 1080p 15.6-inch display. This is the industry minimum for a gaming laptop and so, it’s okay. Above the display is a 1MP front camera for face-to-face chatting and photo capturing.

Keyboard and Touchpad

As previously stated, Xiaomi’s Mi gaming laptop has a peculiar keyboard. While there is no number panel on the keyboard, the keyboard is divided into four zones; where each zone has a special backlighting color.

The touchpad is positioned very close to the center and looks very durable as it has the same color as the rest of the laptop [besides the keyboard].

Performance

The Mi gaming laptop comes in two versions – the lower priced model uses an Intel Core i5-7300HQ CPU in combination with a Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 Ti GPU. In contrast, the pricier variant features the more powerful Intel Core i7-7700HQ CPU and an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 GPU.

For RAM, the lower variant comes with 8GB while the higher model uses 16GB. Storage options include a 128GB plus 1TB of HDD. This laptop comes with Windows 10 albeit a Chinese version.

Battery Life

According to the specs sheet obtained from Gearbest.com, the Mi gaming laptop battery takes about 2 hours to get fully charged and can last for an average of 7 to 8 hours.

Connectivity Options

Moving on, connectivity on the Mi gaming laptop is a big deal as you have a gamut of connectivity ports on both sides (right and left) of the device. There are four USB 3.0 ports, one type-C USB port, a headphone and microphone jacks, an HDMI port, an SD card slot, and RJ-45 port for Ethernet. Not forgetting, there is also Dual-band WiFi and Bluetooth 4.1 for wireless connectivity.

Pricing and Availability

The Xiaomi Mi gaming laptops are available online but only in China. You can however order from Chinese online stores like Gearbest.com for a copy. Pricing for the Mi gaming laptops starts at about $900 for the base configurations (Intel Core i5 with GTX 1050) and goes up to about $2000 for the highest variants.
