Today’s smartphone market is now a crowded section with numerous smartphone from different tech companies offering different features. This makes it very much difficult for customers out there to make up their mind on the device they want. However, this is very much more difficult when you have a tight budget and still want a good value for your money. Nowadays, one of the places to look at for cheap affordable smartphones is the Chinese smartphone makers. The Cubot S550 is the second device with a fingerprint sensor from the Chinese manufacturer with the first being the S600.

The previous device is similar to the Cubot S550 with only a smaller screen. For most people, the a phone with a bad look is usually a deal breaker. For a budget smartphone, the Cubot S550 comes with a nice aesthetics so you can be sure to a nice looking device.


One of the most important things to note when it comes to budget-friendly smartphones is that it must look like a high-end  device at least to an extent. To look the part the Cubot S550 has an ergonomic design with a nice looking metal frame. With a thickness of just 7mm, the device has an ultra-slim build which makes it easy to handle. The device weighs about 159g with a height of 152mm and a width of 76.5mm altogether giving an evenly distributed build.

Like most devices there are offscreen capacitive buttons which lacks a backlight, thus making it difficult to locate at night. Above the screen, there is the ambient light sensor; notification LED light and speaker. The 3.5mm audio jack is located at the top of the device.

The Cubot S550 is made of a smoothly polished metal with CNC technology which contributes to the premium feel it bring to the table unlike the plastic material of most budget friendly devices. The overall appearance is nice with an elegant looking design, available both in black and white.

It has a nice high definition display with a 5.5-inches 1280 x 720 resolution IPS LCD although not quite the best around at a price, this is still acceptable. The Cubot S550 has a pixel density of 267ppi which is a low side but this is a budget phone, so some compromises are allowed. Viewing indoors is quite alright, however, in direct sunlight, there might be some difficulties seeing the screen. For safety, there is a Corning Gorilla Glass 3 that protects from scratches and can take little hits.


In the hardware section, the Cubot S550 has a 64-bit MediaTek MT6735 4 core processor which clocks at 1.3GHz. The processor goes along with an ARM Mali T720 GPU which handles your games quite well with almost no lags. The smartphone comes with an Android 5.1 which is upgradable by the way. It sports a 2GB RAM and a 16GB internal storage which can be expandable up to 32GB.


The Cubot S550 comes with a 3000mAh lithium polymer removable battery and does not support the trending quick charge. The back camera has a 13MP sensor with LED flash, and the front camera has an 8MP sensor.
