Gionee Marathon M5 Plus Smartphone Review, Specs and Price

Gionee Marathon M5 Plus is one of the marathon series smartphone released last year about the time Gionee went through a rebranding and changed their Logo with a tagline that reads Make Smile. The M5 plus as a comparatively slimmer body than the original Marathon M5 although this might be due to a reduction of the battery in the M5 plus.

These phones are not really as budget-friendly as you would think, they are what you refer has the upper mid-range phone in the leagues of the likes of Xiaomi and Oneplus devices. The Gionee Marathon M5 Plus is third in the M-series with variants like M5 lite, M5 Enjoy, and M5 mini.

DESIGN AND DISPLAY

The device has a has a nice slim unibody design and a thickness of just 8.4mm compared to the 8.6mm thick marathon M5. The Gionee Marathon M5 Plus has a metal framed body which gives it an elegant look and a sturdy feel in the hands. However, despite the slimmer body, the M5 Plus has the same weight as the original M5 device at 211g.

It has an M5 Plus has a non-removable back which is home to the rear camera and LED flash in the upper centre half of the device. The screen features a 2.5D curved display which is surrounded by a metallic frame and rounded corners. At the side of the device, there is the volume button, microSD card slot and power button on the right side. On the other hand, there is the dual sim card tray on the left and micro USB port and 3.5mm headphone jack at the bottom.

The Gionee Marathon M5 Plus features a 6-inch 1080 x 1920 resolution with full HD AMOLED display with a pixel density up to 480ppi. This gives a vibrant, colourful display with a fair amount of accuracy and makes viewing under the sun quite comfortable. There is also a fingerprint scanner incorporated with the home button. However, it does not have a Corning Gorilla Glass so you might want to get a screen guard for this one.

CPU, OS AND STORAGE

The Gionee Marathon M5 Plus features an octa-core MediaTek MT6753 processor with Cortex A53 cores which clocks at 1.3GHz compared to the Marathon M5 with just a quad-core MediaTek MT6735 SoC. Although the Marathon M5 and M5 Plus have the same 3GB RAM space, the new M5 Plus boasts of a more robust 64GB ROM which can be extended using a microSD card to about 128GB.

The Marathon M5 Plus runs a custom-made Android 5.1 Lollipop with Amigo 3.1 UI which is similar to what you have on the M5. With the fair amount of feature, there is a reduced amount of lags compared to the M5 Plus which is based on the improved processor as well as the increased app. However, you might still encounter some little glitches when opening some high demanding apps.

BATTERY AND CAMERA

Although the device carries a ‘Plus’ moniker, the phone battery is actually a smaller 5,020mAh battery that will last for about three days on average usage with a full charge. The Gionee Marathon M5 Plus has a 13MP rear camera with LED flashlight and a 5MP front camera which as an average picture quality and 1080p video recording.
