HOMTOM HT20 REVIEW
HOMTOM is a China based smartphone manufacturer that specializes mostly on waterproof, dust-proof and rugged devices. With many devices already made and sold by the company, Homtom is back with the Homtom HT20 which is one helluva “wowing” device when ruggedness is mentioned.
We’ll take a look at the device review and I’ll leave you to tell if you’re wowed… or not.
DESIGN
When rugged smartphones are mentioned, one thing that mostly or automatically comes to mind is “big size or bulkiness”. But on the Homtom HT20, reverse is the case. The Homtom HT20, amongst its rugged peers, is relatively slimmer (if not the slimmest).
With dimensions 76 x 152 x 13.6 mm, the Homtom is 13.6mm thick and weighs 227grams which is quite lightweight for a device tagged as “rugged”.
The device body is made of magnesium alloy and polycarbonate substances which allows for resistance to water and other form of pressure. Homtom also featured what they call “3 layer proofing” to protect this phone from every obstacle possible. The other “proofs” of the device include – dustproof, smash proof and scratch proof.
There’s a fingerprint scanner right below the LED flashlight of the rear camera. The device is available in 3 colour variants; Black, White, and Green.
DISPLAY
The Homtom HT20 has a 4.7-inch Full HD IPS display with a 720 x 1280 pixels resolution. As a rugged device that it is, the screen is duly protected by Corning Gorilla Glass. The screen has a quite large bezel (which is expected because a thin bezel exposes the HT20 screen to easy breakage) and supports multi-touch of up to 5 fingers/touches.
PROCESSOR, OS & STORAGE
The HT20 uses a MediaTek MT6737 chipset and all processes are governed by the ARM Cortex-A53 64-bit quad-core processing unit. The processor reaches a speed of up to 1.3 GHz which is good enough for a device of this calibre, even though it could have been better.
Running on the stock Android Marshmallow v6.0, the 2GB RAM as well as the 16GB internal storage highlights impressive software-hardware combination on the Homtom HT20. There’s a slot for micro SD card which can be used to expand internal storage to up to 64GB.
CAMERA
Typically, a rugged-oriented device is one that is best suited for individuals on adventures or perhaps travellers. Now, what’s an adventure without images or pictures to keep the memories alive? That’s where the Homtom HT20 comes in.
On the rear, there an 8.0 megapixel camera sensor which capture images beautifully and records HD videos at 720p. It is supported by a LED flashlight for clear cut images.
For selfies, a 2.0 megapixel sensor is what the Homtom HT20 provides.
BATTERY
A removable 3,500mAh battery that lasts up to 330 hours of stand-by time and more than for 17 hours on 3G network. The fact that the battery is removable and replaceable is something I love about the Homtom HT20 smartphone. But… you’d agree with me that the battery capacity is quite meagre for a device of this calibre.
A rugged smartphone like the Homtom HT20 should boast of a battery capacity that can last not less than 2 days straight on full charge.
Other notable features
The Homtom HT20 is Ingress Protection 68 (IP68) certified. The 6 represents its resistance to dust, dirt, sand while the 8 stands for its resistance to water.
PRICE & WHERE TO BUY
Asides the eye-catching specs of the Homtom HT20, the rugged, waterproof and dustproof device further adds to its beauty by being affordable.
The Homtom HT20 smartphone retails between $106 (N37,000) and $130 (N45,000).
