How to install DirectX on Windows 10 – Easy Steps

DirectX Windows 10 is a set of libraries and multimedia libraries. These allow the operating systems on which they work, interact directly with the video and audio hardware to process the graphics and multimedia resources in our computer with the best possible performance.

Thanks to DirectX Windows 10 libraries, you can play on your computer with the highest speed and quality possible that your hardware can offer and enjoy movies at the highest possible resolution. If you are experiencing a problem with DirectX on your Windows 10, in this tutorial we will show you everything you need to know about it and its installation.

DirectX Windows 10 versions available

Over the years, this distribution has evolved at the same pace as both hardware resources and the quality of PC games. For Windows 10, two versions are available:

  • DirectX 11 – oriented to offer maximum compatibility with previous versions of operating systems such as Windows XP onwards until version 8.1
  • DirectX 12: created by Microsoft for its latest operating system. It is available for computers, tablets, mobiles and the Xbox One console onwards.

The first thing we have to do is to know if we really need to update or install DirectX. For this we perform the following steps:

  • We go to the start menu and write the command “dxdiag”
  • Another way to do this is by opening the command execution window with the “Windows + R” key combination.
  • In both cases, we will write “dxdiag” and press

We will get a list of elements that describe our software and hardware. If we look down we will see a line that says: “DirectX version”.

Installing DirectX Windows 10 – Version 11

There are occasions in which to play a certain game we need to install certain libraries of versions prior to DirectX 12 in our operating system. For this, the first thing we have to do is go to the official website where we can download it.

Once downloaded to our computer, we will execute the extension file .exe.

Beware of giving “Next” before reading each of the installation steps. In some of them, we will offer the installation of extra applications that may not interest us. We’ll just have to hit “ignore”

Once we have reached the final screen, we will download the installer itself from DirectX. It will offer us the possibility to “install now”. Accepting, the DirectX installation wizard will open.

The first thing we should do is select a directory to extract the files from DirectX 11. We recommend placing them in an accessible folder. Of course, create a folder where to put them because it will be a lot of files. For example, create the directory: C – \ DirectX11

If we leave the box empty, the default path will be  – C – \ Users \ [user] \ AppData \ Local \ Temp

  • When we have the selected directory we give “OK” and the extraction process will begin.
  • Next, we will go to the directory where we have extracted the files to look for one with the name of: “DXSETUP”. This will be the DirectX 11 execution and installation file

After accepting the license terms, the installation will begin. After a few seconds the window will close, so the installation will be completed.

 Installing DirectX Windows 10 – Version 12

Congratulations, in this case, you will not have to do anything about it. Windows 10 has installed DirectX native version 12. This is because it is a program created for this purpose for this operating system and its different versions.

To this day, Microsoft has not provided software packages external to Windows Update. So if you want to update it or the system will do it automatically when they exist, or you’ll have to go to the Windows Update update center.

Despite being the most recent version of DirectX, it offers a notable improvement for support on older computers. This is because they have implemented improvements that significantly reduce the consumption of resources and promise a performance improvement of up to 50% better.

In Microsoft’s latest publication on improvements, they will implement “Machine Learning” in DirectX 12 using the DirectML API. A new step towards the next new generation of games that are coming in the coming years.

DirectX Windows 10 installation errors:

Here we leave the most common mistakes:

Internal Error

One of the most common errors is the “internal error” and can be caused by many factors:

  • Antivirus: the antivirus that we have installed may block the installation of some libraries, considering them suspicious files. Our advice is to disable the antivirus other than Windows Security or Defender itself and run the installation again.
  • The operating system is not updated: another possible error may be due to the system is not updated. Or that the automatic updates are not active. You can visit our tutorial to buy new Windows 10 Professional at a discounted price.
  • Older version installation: it is also possible that the version you are trying to install is older than the version you have. In this case, Windows will not support this one and this error will appear.
  • Other factors – in addition to those mentioned, this error may be due to errors that have appeared in the installation of Windows, either by changes made by registry cleaner programs such as CCleaner or by Windows updates that have ended up destabilizing the system.

DLL error

It is very common that when installing relatively old games we miss the typical error that .dll libraries are missing to run the game. Precisely for this type of errors, we have taught how to manually install DirectX 11.

It usually happens that the games that we download provide their own DirectX installation wizard at the end of the game installation. We recommend omitting this installation since it could install older or less stable versions that we have in our system.

If you are passionate about Gaming or you are starting in this world, it is very possible that someday you will encounter this type of problems and the need to try to solve them by updating your version of DirectX. We hope this tutorial will help you, otherwise, leave it in the comments and we will try to expand it with the problems that are appearing.
