Emergency Communication Centers (ECC), which was established by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) have been commissioned by Dr. Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami in both Ogun and Enugu states.
The commissioning of these two projects is a move to make Nigeria a digitally compliant country. The two projects also happen to be part of seven projects previously inaugurated by the minister during the virtual commissioning of batch nine of the digital communications and digital economy complex, Mbora, Abuja.
The creation of the ECCs fits in with the mandate of NCC as seen in the Nigerian Communications Act (NCA 2003) for dedicating a national emergency number and to make sure that protection of lives and property is possible in Nigeria.
Already, 19 states of the federation are enjoying benefits from fully functional ECC projects.
Dialing a dedicated toll-free emergency number, 112, will make it easy for Nigerians to receive timely help in times of trouble, from appropriate emergency response agencies (ERAs) as the police, Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Fire Service, Ambulance Service, and others like these.
Pantami praised the efforts of the Ministry under his jurisdiction for the cooperation and unity in advancing the course of the digital economy which he presides over. He also stated that the projects are within the tripartite agenda of President Muhammadu Buhari.
He also stated that the Federal Government is leveraging ICT to address developmental issues in Nigeria by facilitating Nigeria’s digital economy targets through policy and regulatory initiatives. He also mentions that the project focuses on the tripod of economic development, curbing corruption, and improving the security of the country.
Other digital economy projects have been commissioned in states such as Jigawa, Bauchi, Imo, Abuja, and Lagos. The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) also had a big impact on these projects.
