But Oppo and Vivo are not being creative with their smartphones in my opinion. They make it look so obvious that they share a connection. Remember the Oppo F7 and Vivo V9 are termed “selfie-focused smartphones and share similar specs. Then there is Vivo X21 and Oppo R15. And now we have the Oppo A83 and Vivo Y83 featuring almost the same specs with a similar name. Let’s see which of these two smartphones is the best “83”.
Oppo A83 VS Vivo Y83 – The Design
The Vivo Y83 features the better design with trending stuff. Though we might not blame Oppo that much since the Vivo Y83 was released five months after the Oppo A83. The Oppo A83 comes ordinary except for its bezel-less display. While the Vivo Y83 comes with the trending top-notch display and also a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor for biometric security. It would seem Oppo have not finally accepted the fingerprint sensor for its budget smartphones. Their latest budget smartphone; Oppo Realme 1 also comes with no fingerprint sensor.
The Oppo A83 and Vivo Y83 measures the same 7.7mm in thickness. While the Oppo A83 weighs 143 grams and the Vivo Y83 weighs 150 grams. The rear camera and LED flash of both smartphones is aligned at the top left corner making them look somewhat identical. The Black, Aurora White, Red, and Gold body colors are available for the Vivo Y83. While you get to choose from Gold, Black, Red and Blue body colors for the Oppo A83.

The Oppo A83 and Vivo Y83 comes with the same IPS LCD panel but in different sizes. The Vivo Y83 sports a 6.22-inch screen size with an 82.7% screen-to-body ratio. While the Oppo A83 sports a 5.7-inch screen size with a 76.2% screen-to-body ratio. The Vivo Y83’s display features 720 x 1520 pixels resolution, 19:9 aspect ratio and 270 pixels per inch density. While the display of the Oppo A83 features 720 x 1440 pixels resolution, an 18:9 aspect ratio and 282 pixels per inch density. The obvious winner in this department is the Vivo Y83 with a bigger screen size and pixels resolution.
Oppo A83 VS Vivo Y83 – The Camera
These two companies just make it easy for you to figure out what they have in common. The rear camera of the Oppo A83 and Vivo Y83 features a 13MP sensor, f/2.2 aperture and LED flash. While up front, they both sport an 8MP shooter with f/2.2 aperture. This category reminds me of our comparison between the Oppo F7 and Vivo V9, where they also had similar camera specs.
Oppo A83 VS Vivo Y83 – Hardware and Software
The Oppo A83 is powered by MediaTek Helio P23 chipset, 8-cores processor clocked at 2.5GHz and Mali-G71 MP2 graphics processing unit. While powering the Vivo Y83 is MediaTek Helio P22 chipset, 8-cores processor clocked at 2.0GHz and PowerVR GE8320 graphics processing unit. The Helio P22 chipset is the newest from MediaTek.
The Oppo A83 runs on ColorOS 3.2 skin on top Android 7.1 Nougat out of the box. It comes in three memory variants; 2GB with 16GB storage, 3GB with 32GB storage and 4GB with either 32GB or 64GB storage. While the Vivo Y83 runs on the newest Android 8.1 Oreo with Funtouch OS 4.0 skin. The phone comes in only a 4GB memory variant with 64GB storage for the Chinese market and 32GB for the Indian market.
Oppo A83 VS Vivo Y83 – The Battery
The Vivo Y83 packs a non-removable Li-lon 3260 mAh battery while the Oppo A83 packs a non-removable Li-lon 3180 mAh battery. And like most of Oppo’s and Vivo’s budget smartphones, there’s no fast battery charging support.
Oppo A83 VS Vivo Y83 – The Price
The Oppo A83 cost about $236 (N82,600) while the Vivo Y83 cost around $295 (N103,250). The Vivo Y83 is definitely better than the Oppo A83. But am not sure the difference in quality equates to the $59 (N20,650). The only big difference between them is the fingerprint sensor on the Vivo Y83.
