As of now, only the new iPhone 8/8 Plus and iPhone X are capable of shooting 4K videos at 60 FPS and also 24 FPS. The smartphones which are powered by the A11 bionic chips are Apple’s latest iPhones and they also let you shoot slow-motion videos in 1080 pixels at 240 frames per second! The 4K (3840 x 2160 pixels) has four times the pixel resolution of 1080p (1920 x 1080 pixels) footage.
Higher frame rate modes such as 4K at 24/60 frames per second and 1080 pixels at 240 frames per second require the high-efficiency HEVC codec or the H.265. So are you ready to record high-quality awesome-looking videos? Proceed with me.
How to Record 4K Video at 60 FPS on iPhone X, 8 or iPhone 8 Plus
Note – Before we proceed, it is important that I mention that one minute of H.265-encoded 4K video at 60 frames per second consumes 400 MB of space on your iPhone, while a minute also, of 4K video at 30 frames per second which is half the frame rate compressed with the older H.264 codec takes 350 megabytes of space on your iOS device. From that, we are able to see that the H.265 codec has more efficiency than the H.264 codec.
Now to record 4K video at 60 frames per second on your iPhone 8/8 Plus and iPhone X, follow the steps below.
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone 8/8 Plus or iPhone X.
- Now scroll down the settings page and tap on the “Camera” option.
- Next, tap on “Formats.”
- Now, you need to activate High Efficiency to enable the H.265 codec for video and HEIF for images.
- Next, tap on the <back button. You can find it at the top left corner of your iPhone’s screen.
- Now, tap on “Record Video.”
- From the list that comes up on the screen, tap on the “4K at 60 fps” option.
- Now, go back to your iPhone’s home screen and then open the Camera app.
- Next, select the video mode.
- Now, when you tap the record button to start recording, it will record your videos in 4K at 60 frames per second. You can also use the Volume button on the side of your device to start and stop recording videos on your device.
So, that is all! You can now record 4K videos at 60 frames per second on your iPhone 8/8 Plus and iPhone X. When you are done recording the 4K videos, they will be encoded with H.265 codec and the saved as a .MOV file on your device. You can check out the videos in the Photos app.
