The latest rumors from the Apple production chain seem to confirm the presence of the TrueDepth Camera, the component necessary for the operation of the Face ID, on a wide range of new devices, including the upcoming iPhone 2018.
There are two key suppliers who, through the publication of the quarterly financial statements and their recent acquisitions, suggest that the VCSEL modules ( Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser ) will be implemented on a large scale during the second half of the year, thanks to the strong demand generated by Apple for this component.
On the one hand, we have Lumentum, the main supplier of VSCEL of the Cupertino company, which ended the quarter with revenues of 301 million dollars, exceeding the expectations of the Wall Street Stock Exchange which had estimated a ceiling of 285 million. A fifth of quarterly revenues – that is, between 60 and 65 million dollars – come directly from the sale of the modules used in the iPhone X, a figure destined to rise during the second half of the year. In addition to suggesting large investments in view of the imminent large supply, the company also seems to confirm the good state of health in which the demand of the current top of the Cupertino house range.
Even Finisar, a secondary provider VSCEL modules, has stepped up its investments through the acquisition of a new plant of more than 6.5 hectares, made it possible to purchase also thanks to more than $ 390 million received from Apple introduced to boost production capacity of society.
Recall that in 2024 the TrueDepth Camera will not land only in the three new iPhone 2018, but is also expected on the next generation iPad Pro. It therefore seems that within a year Apple has managed to make the complete transition of its products to the new biometric authentication system, saluting forever the one based on scanning the fingerprint.
