How To Use iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X Portrait Lighting Mode

Portrait Lighting is a new feature on iOS which is only available on the new iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X. The feature can not work on other iOS devices. You can not use it on even the iPhone 7 Plus even though the device has Portrait Mode. The feature is currently in beta, and it only officially supports the shooting of people. However, you can still capture pictures of objects and animals. Although, when you do this, the depth of field effect may not work correctly. Let’s get on with the guide to learn how to use Portrait Mode on iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X.

1. Pick up your iPhone 8 or iPhone X and open the Camera app.
2. Select Portrait Mode. You can also simply 3D Touch the Camera app and select “Take Portrait” to select the Portrait Mode.
3. Next, you are given five different Portrait Lighting Modes to choose from. To select whichever one you wish, simply go to the menu at the bottom of the viewfinder.

Below are the different options and how they work.

Natural Light – This mode is very quite similar to the iPhone 7 Plus Portrait mode based on the functionality. This mode simply keeps the face of the subject in focus by making the background blurry.

Studio Light – Studio Light helps you brighten up the subject in the picture. It does this by blurring the background of the picture in contrast. When it does, you will be able to notice more details of the subject in your picture.

Contour Light – This mode is quite similar to studio light based as far as functionality is concerned. The main difference, however, is that this mode darkens the light around the edges of the subject in the picture. It does this by casting shadows of the subject’s face. It then makes a difference between parts with highlights and lowlights.

Stage Light – What this mode does is it completely focuses on the subject’s face. It makes the background completely black and then the subject looks pretty bright and clear. With that, you get a high-contrast photo.

Stage Light Mono – This lighting mode is very similar to the Stage Light lighting mode above. It also turns the background completely black and brightens up the subject. The difference, however, is that it uses a monochrome filter to show the subject in only black and white.

Once you have started using Portrait Mode on your device, your iPhone will start giving you suggestions which can help you take better shots.

How To Capture Photos of Animals And Others Using Portrait Mode

Although Portrait Mode does not officially let you capture non-human objects yet, you can still use it to take pictures of pretty much anything. However, the artificial depth of the field may not work as good. To capture photos of non-human objects using Portrait Mode, follow the steps below.

1. Open the Camera app on your iPhone.
2. Next, Select Portrait and the tap on whichever lighting mode you wish to use.
3. Next, fine-tune shot within 8 feet of the subject. Make sure you also follow the on-screen instructions.
4. After you are done following the instructions, the banner on your screen will turn yellow.
5. Now press the shutter button.

Even if the banner doesn’t turn yellow, as long as the object is in place, you can go on and take a shot. Also, remember that the shot will not have the depth of field effect.

How To Apply Portrait Lighting Mode to Existing Portrait Mode Photos on iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X.

When you are done taking the shot, you can now apply Portrait Lighting Mode to the photo you took above. To do this, follow the steps below.

1. First off, Tap on the photo thumbnail at the bottom left corner of your screen.
2. Next, tap on the “Edit” button at the bottom. Instead, you can also open the Photos app and then tap on the photo you want to Edit. Now, tap on Edit a the upper right corner of the screen.
3. Now, slightly tap and hold the lighting button and drag it to the side that matches your favourite mode.
4. Tap on the “Done” button at the bottom right corner of your screen to save your settings.

How To Remove Portrait Lighting Effect From Photos in iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X

Let’s say you wrongly applied a lighting mode, or you feel the lighting mode isn’t what you want, and you want to remove it, you can do this by following the steps below.

1. Open the Photos app on your device and select the photo you want to remove the portrait lighting effect from.
2. Next, tap on the ‘Edit’ button.
3. Next tap on “Revert” at the lower right corner of your screen.
4. Now, tap on “Revert to Original” to confirm your request.
