Even though 5G is still in its infancy, China Mobile and Tsinghua University are teaming up to work on 6G!

Just a few months ago, the president of the United States, Donald Trump spoke of 5G technology and in his speech, he urged America to speed up the deployment process of the technology. He also urged the development of 6G. Some section of the media found the statement by the president funny, considering the blazing fast internet speed which 5G is capable of. Well, apparently, it isn’t too early to start talking about 6G.

In a new announcement by China Mobile and Tsinghua University, it is understood that both institutions are entering into a strategic cooperation framework agreement, one that would see both of them deploy their respective advantages to promote the alliance of “production and learning”, accelerate the innovation of key basic technologies, and lead the transformation and industrialization of technological innovations. The agreement states that both institutions will conduct scientific research cooperation in the future mobile communication networks, next-generation Internet and mobile Internet, industrial Internet, artificial intelligence and other key areas for 6G.

They will also establish a joint research institute with the purpose of creating leading technologies, solutions and products, and promoting technological transformation and application of results.

While doing all these, they will also join hands to train higher level talents, talents, explore synergistic innovation mechanisms for industry, academia, and research, promote the deep integration of innovation chain, industry chain, capital chain, policy chain, and talent chain, explore synergistic innovation mechanisms for industry, academia, and research and stimulate new kinetic energy of science and technology innovation cooperation.

China Mobile reportedly has an R&D team of more than 10,000 people who work full-time as well as having an annual science and technology expenditure of over 20 billion Yuan. The company has undertaken 172 major scientific research projects and patent applications more than 16,000.

5G is the successor to 4G and it provides a plethora of new opportunities in many areas of life outside telecommunication such as the automobile industry, health care and many more. Experts say that 5G is 100 times faster than the 4G technology we use now. Of course, 6G may be a couple of years away but the speed which it will come with is just unimaginable especially when you consider the potentials of the crazy fast 5G.
