Most users probably don’t need such a powerful backup tool, especially since it requires some strong technical knowledge to install and run. Because consumer backup tools, like Google backups, have improved, they have become less and less necessary for anyone outside of Android developers and other professionals.
That said, if you don’t trust Google, you have an older phone that you want to keep in shape or clone your device, or you just want to know more about your phone and how it works, the Titanium Backup Pro installation is a good one project, especially if you have a spare phone or tablet on hand that you don’t mind potentially losing.
The big drawback of Titanium Backup Pro
To properly use Titanium Backup Pro, you need to root your Android device, which has advantages and disadvantages. Even when you know what you are doing, you are running a risk and could “wall up” your device. Proceed with caution before installing Titanium Backup Pro.
Furthermore, you will need a device that supports SD cards and an SD card with at least the same memory as your phone. Make sure you download both the free version of Titanium Backup and the paid version from the Google Play Store and back up to your SD card.
Back up and root the phone before using Titanium Backup
First, you need to perform a full backup of the device before running the root, since the root will delete all the data present. This is especially important if you decide to remove Titanium Backup Pro and restore your Android device.
- Enable backup on Google Drive. This will back up Google Contacts, Calendar events and settings, Wi-Fi networks, phone settings, apps and more. Go to Settings > System > Backup > Google Backup.
- On Samsung, you need to tap Settings > Accounts and backups > Backup and restore > Google account to get to the same place. You can also use your Samsung account to back up your phone.
- Back up photos and other documentation using Google Photos or a similar backup app.
- Back up text messages using SMS Backup or a similar tool.
- Connect an SD card and run your device’s SD backup tool, also available in Settings > Backup > Backup and restore. Make sure all the apps you want to keep and their data are backed up to the SD card.
- Next, you’ll need to root your Android device. If this is the first time you are rooting a device, we recommend using an older device to practice.
Once done, restore the backups by activating the app or using a file explorer app to transfer information from the SD card.

Use a file explorer tool, which should be included with the root device, to transfer Titanium Backup and product key to the device. Leave them on the SD card in case you need to reinstall the app.
How to backup Android with Titanium Backup
That’s where the power of Titanium Backup Pro comes in. Data backup and recovery is extremely simple after doing all this work.
- Open Titanium Backup and tap the Backup / Restore tab.
- Touch Menu > Batch.
- Tap Backup All user apps and the app will perform this backup function. Then tap Back.
- Back up anything else you could want. Green elements are recommended backups. These will be saved to your SD card, so make sure you have enough space.
How to restore from an Android backup
Once you have a backup, you will have a copy of all your data that you can restore. Use these simple steps to restore from a Titanium Backup backup:
- Open Titanium Backup and tap the Backup / Restore tab.
- Tap Menu > Batch > Restore all missing apps and system data.
- Restart your Android phone.
