Huawei, as we all know, is a household name in the smartphone industry. Producing wonder devices with monster specs and features is one thing any tech enthusiast would know Huawei to be good at.
The Huawei product up for review today is the Huawei GR5 2017, a big improvement over last year’s GR5 model. And though it is more expensive, it possesses better specs and features than its older brother. Worth every penny of the price.
Now shall we take a look at this beauty together?
DESIGN
The Huawei GR5 2017 is premium looking device that is made up of a finely blended mix of mainly metal with a little touch of plastic. Plastic was used for the top and bottom portions to make way for network/signal reception.
The rear facing dual camera set-up sits centrally at the top portion of the phone, just above the round-shaped fingerprint sensor. The tiny looking LED flash can also be seen to be beside the top/first camera of the duo. The metal body is curved as it joins with the front part of the glass screen.
On the GR5’s front, there is a simple and plain set up. You will only find the selfie camera, the built-in ear piece for phone calls and the HUAWEI logo on the front.
Moving round the GR5, the volume adjusters and power/lock button will be found on the right, the 3.5mm earpiece jack at the top, the microSD/SIM tray on the left side, and the USB charging port at the bottom.
Still at the bottom, the dual speaker grille is found on both sides of the USB port flanks. Mind you, only the right speaker grille produces sound, the left grille is just a figurehead.
DISPLAY
The GR5 2017 has a 5.5-inch IPS LCD panel, just like the last year’s version. The 1920 x 1080 resolution ensures that images produced on the display screen are nothing but beautiful, colourful and crystal clear at every viewing angle possible. Impressive display!
PROCESSOR & OS
The Huawei GR5 2017 has the HiSilicon Kirin 655 SoC Octa-core processor. On the GR5 2017, Huaei decided to dump the mid-range Qualcomm Snapdragon processor and used the HiSilicon instead. Brilliant! The HiSilicon Kirin 655 SoC has a processor speed clocked at 2.1 GHz. This will have device processes like heavy games and multitasking as easy as it sound. And with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of on-board storage, you definitely can’t help but to agree with me. Can you?
However, as excited as I am about the processor, the Operating system utilized on this device just reduced the euphoria. The GR5 comes with Android 6.0 Marshmallow and Huawei’s custom EMUI 4.1. We have seen many devices out there that already have the Android 7.0. Why not the GR5 too? Well, hopefully, there would be an OTA Nougat update.
CAMERA
Of course, the dual rear camera is one of the major highlight of the GR5 2017. The primary shooter is a 12MP snapper whose job is to mainly capture images. The other cam is an extra 2MP that determines the depth of field thereby creating the bokeh effect or a blurred background – in plain words, improved image/subject focusing.
On the front, the 8MP selfie camera performs wonders. The front camera rendition is amazing. It gives nice and well-lighted selfies, even in low light conditions.
BATTERY
A 3340mAh battery pack is aboard to power all processes on the GR5 2017. There is however no fast charge as it takes about two hours to get a full charge from 0%.
CONCLUSION
The Huawei GR5 is a stunner. The selfie lovers will appreciate both the selfie shooter and dual camera set-up, the game freaks will love the processor speed and RAM, and finally, who wouldn’t want a device that you don’t have to worry about charging all the time? The GR5 is an all-rounder.
That being said, the device would become more perfect when Huawei releases an Android 7.0 Nougat update.
