What is Android One?

Android One is actually a Google programme where the company is partnering with smartphone companies in developing nations to create “high-quality” devices but at low-cost.

The Android One OS was announced in June 2014 by Google CEO Pichai and India was the first country where Google launched Android One phones.

According to the Mountain View company the Android One OS is its attempt to create affordable smartphones so individuals still using a feature (Non smartphone) phone can make the switch easily without hurting their bank accounts.

How Are Android One Device Different From Other Android Phones?

I’d love to state this in points

  1. Despite Android One similarities with the regular version of Android phones according to Google some extra customization has been added into the software to make it run smoothly on low end devices.
  2. Android One lacks third-party user interface (eg TouchWiz UI on Samsung Galaxy phones, Sense UI on HTC etc.) or unnecessary features (eg Blow to unlock screen and other fancy gimmicks). It is basically the version of Android created by Google.
  3. With normal Android phones in the marker, the company selling the phone is solely responsible for choosing the appropriate hardware and software for the devices but this is different in Android One Devices, here Google is in total control and dictates the hardware and software experience. Google is also responsible for delivering software updates to Android One phones. This means you can expect Android One phones to get latest version of Android (I see you Marshmallow) Google  promises that every Android One phone will get updates for at least two years, so expect the Infinix Hot 2 to get updates to Android 6.0 Marshmallow.
